Madrid or Barcelona?

Planning a trip to Spain, specifically in mid-March. At least 3 days in Madrid or Barcelona then head to the Costa del Sol. Which city is better? cultural, historical, etc. As for the Costa del Sol, what is the weather like in mid March, where on the Costa del Sol would you recommend staying.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bryan

I have yet to visit Madrid, but have Barcelona. I always shy away from "better" because it's a matter of taste an preference. Here's what's what in Barcelona:
Gaudi buildings - the church is fantastic, but there are commercial buildings that have amazing interiors that are not to be missed.
Picasso and Dali - within the city itself, as well as just a short train ride away, are museums and galleries displaying the art.
Shopping - Barcelona is a very sophisticated city; I saw gorgeous clothing in the stores, less 'faddy' than in other cities.
Food - yum Catalan Cuisine. Paella, fish, veggies in casseroles yum
Drink - hop, skip and a jump from the sparkling wine caves so lots of terrific wines; coffee is excellent; there's a hot chocolate drink that's too magnificent to describe
Miscellaneous: Olympic Village; bullfights; the Ramblas; statue of Christopher Columbus
Monserrat - short ride away, the monastery on the mountain; knee-trembling cable car ride to the top; extraordinary views; Stations of the Cross are beautiful statues on a winding path; statue of Pablo Casals (local boy made good) overlooking the scenery below

I think Barcelona is more fun but we enjoyed Madrid as well. As for the Costa del Sol, Nerja is the place to go. Feel free to email me for hotel and restaurant recommendations/opinions if you do decide to go to Nerja.

Bryan,

I would cast my vote for Barcelona, also. As noted in the previous posts, there are plenty of museums, I believe the Opera House is open again, AND it is a much easier city to walk than Madrid, which is more spread out. The weather will be milder in mid-March also. Rest assured, no matter which city you decide to vist, both offer plenty of culture and nightlife. Barcelona just has more charm.

I have never visited the Costa del Sol, but in mid-March I bet it will be cool and windy. There are some recent posts on the subject that you might find helpful.
