I have been shopping for a 22" roller for my upcoming 2wks in July. I've been eyeing a Tumi 22" roller weighing at 7lbs (it's the lightest piece in the store, for similar sizes), but a bit pricey.

There are two parts to my question: 1) Has anyone own a Tumi, and if yes, do you think it's worth the money? 2) Can you recommend any other brand that has 22" roller, that is lightweight (less than 10 lbs) and costs a lot less than Tumi? I usually buy a Samsonite but couldn't find one that weighs less than 10 lbs - they're about 13-14 lbs. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your feedback.

I have a Tumi wheeled backpack that I use as a carryon; I liked having both hands free to haul my other suitcase onto the train. But I don't like the way the inside is organized, so, no I don't think it's worth the price.

I'm now thinking of getting a set of Victorinox Werks Traveler 2.0 luggage. The expandable 22" weighs 9 lbs and costs $250, and it has a lifetime warranty. It was the lightest 22" in my local suitcase store (which Tumi are you discussing -- the ones I picked up were more than 7 lbs).

Hope others will see this and chime in!

I looked at Tumi Carbon 22" for $295 and a duffel bag for $170. I didn't actually weigh the Tumi myself, I took the sales guy's words - and it felt lightest from all other luggages I saw. I just saw an Atlantic 22" roller for $69.95 in packinglight.com and it only weighs about 8lb 4oz.

I own a lot of brands of luggage and Tumi is one of the many. I don't know where you live, but go to T.J.Maxx or T.J.Maxx and More and buy your luggage. I bought my mom's wheeled,Tumi suitcase...the biggest size they make for $212. red-tagged.The day I went, they had tons of Tumi. I called friends and told them and they went to T.J.Maxx and a bought their Tumi luggage,too. We got it at the T.J.Maxx and More store. I prefer Kipling luggage myself. I can also get that, from time-to-time, at T.J.Maxx.I was just there last week and they had the huge Kipling duffel bags for $59.99.They said a whole shipment of Kipling had come in just a few days prior. A few years ago,I bought the ...22-inch suitcase ($178. tag on the bag) for $49.99 and also the backpack on wheels ($178. tag again) for $49.99. I live in Los Angeles County.T.J.Maxx has tons of that Swiss Army luggage in stock...the red suitcases and carry-on bags have been in the stores for months. Plus,just week before last I bought a gorgeous,gray, trimmed in black leather...with black leather strap TUMI carry-on bag for $159.99. Happy Travels!

I buy my luggage only at discount stores. Tumi is too expensive for me and I don't see the point. My 22" is 7.5 lbs and cost >$50 at JC Pennys. My 24" from Marshalls similar priced.

IF and when someone makes a suitcase that weighs >3 lbs. THEN i'd be thrilled to drop some big bucks!

Guenmai took the words right out of my mouth. I was in TJ Maxx yesterday in Florida and saw a Victorinox Werks bag there but didn't look at the price since I am trying to kick the habit.

I was all set to treat myself to a Tumi bag when I read some bad reviews of it on fodors. Some people apparently do not think it is worth the price.

I think I'll stick to buying my luggage at Marshall's and Ross. The price is right and RBH has always held up well. The only brand I ever owned that was absolute junk was TravelPro. Every time I used that bag something fell apart on it, until I dumped the damn thing.

I own a few Tumi pieces and am very happy with the luggage itself and their customer service. I recently needed repair on a piece that I've had for 9 years for both warranty and non-warranty issues. They didn't charge me for any of the repairs even though some of the damage was obviously airline abuse. Within 2 days of receiving my bag, they'd performed all of the repairs and shipped it back to me. Great service!

This TravelPro 22" is one of the lightest I've found and costs around $100. The link below is from luggage.com but you may be able to find it cheaper.

I bought a 22" wheeled backpack by Ricardo about a year ago at Kohl's that weighs around 5 or 6 lbs. I love it but they aren't making them anymore. I definitely agree that you should go light. A couple of lbs DOES make a difference.

Hi! Not sure where you are from, but you might want to check a Marshall's store or a TJ Maxx. I was at both stores today in our area and each had several pieces of Tumi.

I bought a 22" Atlantic at Kohls for 69.99 (and I had a coupon). It love it, it expands if need be, and has lots of zipper compartments. I just can't see spending alot on luggage, with the way it gets handled and all.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I didn't even think about going to Kohl's, Marshall, or TJ Maxx (We have them in town, too) - so I will do that tomorrow to do some comparison shopping.

When I surfed the Internet earlier, I was able to rank the following brands for their 22" roller based on their weight (lightest to heaviest):
Atlantic (8lb 4oz)
Eagle Creek (8lb 8oz)
Pathfinder Avenger (9lb 6 oz)
TravelPro (10lb 3 oz)

We bought our first Tumi over 16 years ago (that we STILL use!) and have only purchased Tumi since. Tumi is the best luggage we have ever owned! IMO it is worth every penny. Had to send our original piece back after 10 years for wheel repair - they not only replaced the wheels but drycleaned the luggage and returned it 2nd day air to us at NO CHARGE. Great company - great luggage. You can't go wrong...

As a former frequent flyer flying weekly (sounds like the beginning of a tongue twister) I noticed that the majority of bags on the escalator were Tumi bags (busines travelers using carry-on only). When I first started traveling in the "good old days" Hartmann was the #1 bag, but they are so heavy and the flying times have changed (days of checked bags primarily).

I never bought a Tumi because I didn't think I could afford it. But, for any of those traveling to South Ga, I recently discovered there is a Tumi outlet in Vidalia, GA. You can get your Tumi and onions at the same time!

I bought a Tumi handbag backpack nine months ago. I use it every day for work and sometimes on weekends. It has all the features I need (inner zipped pocket for my wallet, etc.) But I'm annoyed because the fabric around the zipper started weakening in a couple of spots a few months ago, and now there is a third spot where this is happening. I can still use the bag, but if it gets much worse I might go to the Tumi store where I bought it and see if they can help me out. I'm a little annoyed because I feel that for the amount of money it costs, it should be made better.

Anyway, aside from that, I'm very happy with it. It looks great and it functions the way I want it to.

I have a couple of Tumi pieces, its beauty lies in the fact that it's lightweight, and apparently highly durable, but for that money I don't find it particularly stylish. It's sort of backpacker deluxe.

I travel frequently, for business and personal. In 1998, our checked suitcase did not make the connection from Munich to Los Angeles via London Heathrow. After that experience, I use carry-on luggage only.

I own many brands of luggage, including a 22-inch Tumi roller bag, and a 20-inch Tumi carry-on without wheels. Those two bags are my favorites because of their looks, durability, and light weight.

I recommend getting the lightest bag possible. Many European carriers have strict carry-on weight restrictions, such as Air France at 26.4 pounds. Plus, a lighter bag is easier to manage on the Metro/Tube/U-Bahn, on trains, and at hotels without an elevator.

I checked TJ Maxx yesterday and didn't see any Tumi, they had tons of Samsonite and American Traveler. I saw a Delsey though, and it was pretty light - but didn't care for the color, so I didn't get it. I am going to check around again in other stores to see what they have.
