Long Lay-over
On my way to a wonderful vacation in Italy for 3 weeks (9/26/01), I have a long (8 hrs going and 12 coming home)lay-over in Frankfurt. Any suggestions on what to do? Too long to stay at the airport. What's the transportation like into town and which is the easiest? Anything worthwhile seeing in that length of time? Appreciate any help.

Bev, you don't say what time of day your layover is. You have plenty of time to go into Frankfurt either time. Frankfurt is mostly a financial city, but there are a couple of museums. You could wander through the old town, visit Sachenhausen across the river and have some apple wein and a nice meal. Wiesbaden is less than an hour by train and is a nice city. I lived there a couple of years. You could look for a dark haired beauty by the name of Brunhilda for me!!!
Cheers,
Art
Another possibility would be to take a train from the airport to Bingen (change at Mainz). There are two or three trains an hour, and it's less than an hour to Bingen. Then cruise the Rhine to Koblenz--about three and a half hours. Timetables are at

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep...e/boot0002.htm

Then a direct train from Koblenz back to the airport--about another hour.

Thanks for the responses - on the way over we get in at 8:00 a.m. and leave at 4:00 p.m. and on the way back we get in 12:00 noon and leave at 11:00 p.m. Also should we plan on having some German currency for transportation costs and use credit cards for meals, etc?

We took a 1/2 day bus tour of Frankfurt during a pause in our trip. It wasn't a WHOLE 1/2 day, so it was not too long. We learned about the history of the city and got to go into a few small museums. It gave me a MUCH lovlier perspective of this industrial city.
