We (early 40s, kids at camp) are starting to plan a trip to Iceland for next summer (late July/early August.)

Here is what I have so far. Please let me know your suggestions:

Day 1: arrive from PHL, stay at Blue Lagoon
Day 2: drive the Golden Circle, stay in Hella?
Day 3: explore the South Coast, take ferry to Westman Islands, stay in Westman Islands
Day 4: continue exploring South Coast, stay in Vik
Day 5: visit Jökulsárlón, return to sleep in Vik
Day 6: drive from Vik to Reykjavík, seeing what we missed, stay in Reykjavík
Day 7: Reykjavík
Day 8: fly to PHL

Is the “day trip” from Vik to Jökulsárlón and back too ambitious?

We stayed near Kirkjubćjarklaustur this past July, which is an hour east of Vik, and took a day trip to Jökulsárlón. I recall it being about a two-hour drive each way, for us, so it will be about three for you. It is certainly possible. You will have long daylight hours, so it depends on how much driving you like to do in a day. FWIW, Vatnajökull National Park is along that drive and has some nice hikes. We stopped there first and did the hike up to Skogafoss (waterfall) and another out to the face of the glacier. Also, there is a smaller glacial lagoon just west of Jökulsárlón, called Fjallsárlón. It is (or was for us, anyway) less crowded, and the shoreline is closer to the glacier - definitely worth a stop.
