London layover question

The short answer is "nope." We've discussed this before here. Even 6 hours is dicey for going into London given security, transportation time etc... The terminals are full of shops, some of them interesting as well as restaurants and pubs. Your first flight could also be late. Heathrow is notorious for delays, especially if you are landing in the morning rush hour.So stay put!

I agree! Heathrow is pretty far out of central London and although there's a tube to the city, by the time you do immigration and customs, and depending on where you are transferring to (you may have to change terminals!) the 4 1/2 hours will go quickly. There's a great bookstore at Heathrow and a good duty free if you are leaving for another country--the shops are better than most U.S. airports.
Catherine,
you can quickly see the most important sights and be back in time to catch your flight.
get a taxi straight into Trafalgar Square and there are tour buses on every street corner.
jump on one and in les than 2 hours they will have driven past everywhere that you want to see.
Get straight back in a cab and you'll be in plenty of time for your flight and alot of good photo's and memories.
If you don't try, you'll kick yourself for just sitting in the airport.
Also, you can get off the tour bus where ever you want and so if you are running a little short of time, you can always get off before completing the tour and catch a cab.
London cabs are on every street corner!
good luck.
