Lisbon accomodation

We are a couple in our 60's. We are staying in Lisbon for 7 nights. We prefer apartments and intend to book it ourselves. There are a lot of choices and I cannot figure out the best location to stay. We will not be hiring a car. We will be in Lisbon at the end of September 2019. In the description of the apartments it says distance from city and from Bairro Alto. I assume from the city means from the old city. There is a lot of accommodation in Alfama. Is this too far. I do not necessarily want to be in the main tourist area, just not too far from the city and public transport. Can someone please give me idea of a good location to book an apartment and if there are any other places to book an apartment in Lisbon other than the main providers.

The city is large, have no idea what whatever you are reading means by "distance from city". Suggest looking at a map.

The "old city" would be the Alfama, as most of the rest was flattened in an earthquake in 1755 and rebuilt. The Alfama is very hilly. Come to that, Lisbon is hilly, I prefer to stay on the flat near Rossio station.

Public transport is very good in Lisbon, you certainly don't need a car.

Personally, I would not stay in Alfama even if someone pays me. It is so rundown and dilapidated! It has its own charms maybe, but not for me.

Rossio is very nice.

We stayed in lovely Cascais and did day trips to Lisbon - for us it was an ideal choice, but might not be for you.

Hi Tulips,

We stayed at the Fortaleza do Guincho, the Relais and Chateaux property with Michelin one star restaurant, which was not overly expensive but required reservation. We had such a great time there! The sunset views were so stunning that we were returning a bit earlier every evening just for that (and food of course). The hotel arranged a taxi to Sintra for us and we drove to Belem ourselves and found parking. For Lisbon, we were taking a train.

The hotel:

The restaurant:

If you need a really special hotel in Evora, please let me know.

Thank you Vinonobile, that looks amazing. We're also looking at villa's in Cascais since we need 3 rooms. Haven't decided yet.

You should be aware that many sections of Lisbon consists of hills. Places like the Alfama and Barrio Alto have lodging which sometimes requires a significant climb going and coming. Around Rossio is flat but it is like the center of the tourist area if that does not appeal.

I stayed in Cascais once and liked it but it was a private residence.
The town has a great market during the week (the day escapes me ) you should not miss.

Baixa is flat. This is a good place to stay because it is central and you can easily walk to the train stations Cais do Sodre and Rossio. You are also close to the Metro, which you can take to visit the Gulbenkian Museum.

Do you read Fernando Pessoa? You should. He is Porugal's greatest writer and there is a statue of him at Cafe Brasileira.

Bom dia,
Thin🐩
