Lisboa / Hotel recommendation

Hi guys out there,

has anybody a hotel recommendation for Lisboa? It should be nice, central, clean, with private parking - but not (too) expensive.

Any advise is welcome!
After doing a lot of search, we have booked (in September) to stay at the Hotel Metropole, right on the main square facing the "column". It is 27,00 per night (US 126.) including buffet breakfast. They have parking --which I believe is around the corner? Guess we'll find out when we get there. After booking it I discovered an article I clipped from Travel and Leisure last May which listed it as "best value" in Lisbon.

I am exploring options for where to stay in Lisbon this Sept. I saw your recommendation for Metropole. Sounds like a great location. Do you have a website address? I haven't been able to find it and can't find that issue of Travel & Leisure. I was about tobook Avenida Palace until I saw you note.

The best hotels in Lisbon to stay are the Tivoli and the Hotel da Lapa

We stayed at the Lisboa y Tejo and liked it very much. We tried to get into the Metropole, but it was booked and they recommended this place which was right around the corner. The rooms were good size (they may be different sized rooms though)and they had a decent breakfast. The staff was extremely nice - the airlines lost our luggage for three days!!! So they were very helpful in making phone calls.

Its also written up in Rick Steves book.

Well, so much time has passed since my post near the beginning of this thread, that I can now offer my first hand experience of The Metropole. We stayed there two nights this past weekend, and of the approximately 45 hotels we have stayed in during the past 4 and a half months, it is third from the bottom. First, the room was dangerous. I say that because the carpet was so poorly stretched (I think the room had probably been flooded at one time) that we both actually tripped over the big ridges sticking up in it, not to mention the filth of the carpet itself. Also, we had a toilet seat that was completely cracked through, quite dangerous, if not exciting at times. The public rooms were quite nice, but our room (they said it was one of their best, and it did have the largest balcony right in the center of the front) was a disaster for a three star hotel. They told us they "could provide parking nearby". That was parking ourselves in the nearest public lot with no price break, even for 24 hours. We paid over $56.00 for less than 48 hours. IN addition, we had been excited about its location right on one of the most popular squares, but were surprised to find it completely torn up, surrounded by corrugated metal, and undergoing total reconstruction. I saw the Tivoli and would recommend it (although I didnīt see rooms). Our room at the Tivoli in Sintra was wonderful however.
