Hi,

We are 2 adults & 2 children between 7-10 years. On this forum we were recommended to buy Lander tickets for use between cities.

Our itinerary works out :
Arrive in Munich & proceed to Garmish May 9
Garmish-Berchtesgaden : May 11
Berchtesgaden -Munich : May 14
Munich-Gutach : May 16
Gutach-St. Goar : May 19
St.-Goar--Eschwege
Eschwege-Frankfurt

1. When we buy Lander ticket can we travel at any time on the regional trains. Is it for unlimited travel on the particular day or is it valid for a fixed train.
2. Do I need to know the states in which these places are located? eg. Munich-Gutach are in 2 separate states. Do I need to buy 2 lander tickets? Is there a way in which I can locate the correct state whose lander ticket I need to buy eg. Gutach-St. Goar and St.-Goar to Eschwege.
3. I am okay with travelling on bus from GP-Berch. But, unable to locate any connections to save on time. Any suggestions. RVO bus site is in german and the translation is of little help.

Do you recommend buying lander tickets in advance for the dates of travel or can I buy in Munich on arrival.

1. They are for unlimited travel on any regional trains the same day. Also good in many city transportation networks, meaning tram, bus, subway (especially in Bavaria).

2. YES! They are valid in the particular state only. If you travel through two or more states then you maybe better buy the "Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket" which is 42 Euro for one person, +7 Euro for each additional person (not sure about the kids, though).

3. From GaP to Berchtesgaden the best option - unfortunately - is to backtrack through Munich (trains).

You can buy the Länder-Tickets on the same day from the machines. Or buy the evening before but make sure to select the correct date. They 'speak' English. Fill in your name before getting on the train.

1. The Länder ticket is a day pass, valid for unlimited travel during the day (on weekdays after 9 a.m.) on any local train within the area it is valid for.

2. Obviously you need to know which federal states you are travelling in. Maps are a good help, or Wikipedia...
For 2 states you need 2 tickets. For Munich - Gutach (Black Forest, I assume?) it's Bayern and Baden-Württemberg. By the way, check carefully when looking up train connections because there are at least 3 Gutachs in the Black Forest.
For those "inter-state" trips, however, there are two alternatives that might come cheaper:
If the trip takes place on a Saturday or Sunday, there is the "Happy Weekend" ticket: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/pri...d_ticket.shtml
There is also the Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket (**Grumble** Why don't they have it on the English version of the website?) which allows, just like the Länder-Tickets, unlimited travel on local and regional trains on weekdays after 9 a.m. but all over the country. The price is 42 € for the first person + 6 € each for the second to fifth person.

3. No idea, but I could help you with the translation if you tell me exactly what connections you need and provide the link to the German page you're stuck with.

The price is the same as from a ticket machine. The only advantage is you don't have to worry about buying the ticket on the day. You can get them from ticket machines any time. At the counter the price is 2 € more, if you prefer to talk to a living person.

Update to 2. - your kids are free with the Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket. And quokka is right, it's 6 Euro for every additional person.

Thanks to both of you. I am still hoping if there is a bus connection between GP & Berch which will save us some time.

If you don't find one on www.bahn.de then there is no bus connection between GaP and Berchtesgaden.

I've never found one. Every time back to Munich then to Berchtesgaden.
