Killarney in October

From the United States:

My inlaws are going to be in Killarney the 3rd week of October. As the mother in law has a brain tumor, my father-in-law's company is sending the daughters along as a gift to make the trip special.

The wife would like me to be there also, but I need to find and fund my own way. They'll be at the Hotel Europe, which I think is full up (based on trying to make online reservations).

Would appreciate any information one could send me about a decent place to stay nearby, which airport is closest, and which airline has the most room (I'm a big guy).

Thank you in advance for any kind assistance you might lend -

craig
Wow Craig, very generous of the company to pay for the daughters.

Ok here is what I would advise. You don't state where you are leaving from and that would help. My mother recently told me there are good deals Sept/Oct on Sceptre (charter) airlines I am not sure if they run a deal with Aerlingus. I think all seats are faily small these days so try to get one by the emergency exit so at least you have legroom. I think Aer Lingus is a more comfortable airline to fly than the U.S. ones or charters.

You would be best flying into Shannon airport in the middle of the country as Dublin is very far from Killarney. You can either from there rent a car & drive or fly/connect to Cork airport and then get a car. Please be careful as the roads are a lot more primitive than the USA and I would seriously reccommend a B&B for the night when you land befiore driving. Too many people end up injured on the road here due to conditions and people who are not used to our roads.

As for hotels you can find out at www.bordfailte.ie which is the national tourist board. There are always B&B's available as well. You will find if people know your situation with your in-laws they will bend over backwards to help in any way so don't be shy asking!

This is off season so you should not have any trouble getting a flight or some kind of deal.

Good luck and let me know if you have any further queries and I will maill direct to you

Cheers

Sue
Closest airport with direct transatlantic flights is Shannon http://www.snn.aero/ Aer Lingus are one of the airlines flying into there http://www.aerlingus.com Alternatively you could fly into Cork (1.5 hours drive from Killarney) but it does not have direct transatlantic flights so you would have to transit through one of the London airports most likely. As for a place to stay if you haven't done so already ask the Hotel Europe to suggest somewhere and maybe consider giving them a call they might not be fully booked after all. There is a holiday weekend in October, Monday 28th is a public holiday but that shouldn't clash with your plans.

Kieran is right, I think if you call them they wil assist and smention you family is staying there as well amny time they may have accommodation if you speak to them personally. You should really have a chat with them and explain the situation. I am sure they could find a room for you there or at a B&B. I'ts worth the price of a call.

Wow - what a nice company - I sure hope the daughters appreciate the generosity of your father-in-laws employer -

Is your mother-in-law terminal? Sorry to hear about that. What a nice gift though to have her daughters on a trip oversea.

I agree with Sue, you should call the hotel directly and ask if they have any accomodations for you. Does your father-in-law approve of you going too or is it just the "kids" he wants going.

Craig,

I know that I will get flamed for this one, but mabye it would be a nice gesture for you to hang back and allow your in-laws to enjoy this time with their children alone.

How often is it that adult children spend time with their pareents and siblings alone without spouses or thier own children? Ive never had the opportunity, but wish I had
