Just back from Denmark
We have just returned from a month-long trip to Denmark--stayed in a couple of hotels, one in Copenhagen, one in Haderslev, DK, and one in Lubeck Germany, and rented a house for the rest of the time. We traveled all over Denmark by car--any questions?

What air carrier did you fly and did you get a decent fare? I really want to go back to Denmark, but the fares are awful - I don't wanna pay over $600 per person for summer travel. Also, where did you stay in Haderslev? My great grandparents came from tiny villages nearby and I understand Haderslev has some good geneological resources. Is there anything to see in Haderslev? Thanks.

We flew Delta--it was about 800.00. You've got to go to Haderslev! We stayed at Hotel Norden and really liked it. Haderslev is a small town with the usual (for DK) pedestrian street in the middle. There are a couple of churches to visit, otherwise just the quaint charm of a "non-touristy" village. My grandfather was from Haderslev, hence our visit there. We met with an archivist named Bent at the library and he gave us lots of information, including pictures of the house he lived in. We also visited the house, which was very exciting. e-mail me if you need further info!
Doug, there are flights to DK from the US this Summer for under $600 if you're flexible. For example, Airtech has flights on Luxair from New York to Copenhagen at $450rt tax included, but they are only bookable within 10 days of departure if a seat shows available. Take a look at Eurotrip's bulletin boards for cheap flights, transport, and lodging info. (www.eurotrip.com)

For Jackie--
I like the Hotel Danmark on Vestervoldgade. Immaculately clean, wonderful breakfast, nice personnel, and a great location. It is about one block from Radhuspladsen, the National Museum, and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek, about three blocks from the Walking street and from Tivoli. Prices for a double are about 850 DKK. The dollar buys 7.27 DKK today. The Danmark has a web site.
In Copenhagen, we stayed at the Hotel Kong Arthur, about $160.00/night. It was OK--nothing to write home about! We planned to go to Skagen, but did not make it, and that is the only thing that we missed that I really regret. As another poster mentioned, Winter daylight is short--the sun sets mid-afternoon. You can still have a good time, and I don't think places will be closed during Winter.
For K Noel and Doug,
Are we related? My grandparents also came from near Haderslev--Fjelstrup for the Hagedorns. My grandfather--Bossen--is said to come from Billon, but since I never found that, I assume it is Billund. You are not related to Hagedorns or Bossens, are you?
In Denmark one uses the Danish krone (DKK). Today one gets 7.2575 DKK to the dollar, a very good exchange. You can check that daily at www.oanda.com. You will find ATM machines at the airport, at the railroad station, and at banks throughout the city. Your debit card must have a 4-digit pin.
Boots-I don't think we're directly related since thos last names you mentioned aren't in my family archives, but since i can only trace my branch of the Lund family back to 1872 in Orbyhage (near Haderslev) who knows who married whom? Unfortunately, Haderslev is one of the few parishes that hasn't compiled its geneological records on the Internet.

K Noel and Doug--
Though your answers indicate we aren't related, it was nice getting your responses. I did go to the parish church in Fjelstrup, and the pastor was able to find quite a bit of information in very old handwritten books. A Danish professor I met on a bus from Haderslev to Fjelstrup put a notice in their newspaper asking about Hagedorns and got five responses, so I was able to visit families there that gave me information about my family.
Thanks for renewing memories of my visits there.
Hi,
We are planning a trip to Copenhagen in early October. Where did you stay in Copenhagen. I have Fodor's recommendations but wonder what your experience was.
Also I read that Cop. is a summer place. Will everything be shut down by Oct? Jessie and David.
