Itinerary - Help!

After a suggestion from another poster, I am soliciting advice on my itinerary. My husband and I will be going for a two week trip in late May/early June. This is what we were thinking:

Day 1 through 4 - Paris
Day 5 - Train to Frankfurt, rent a car and drive to Wurzburg where we spend the night
Day 6 - Wurzburg and Rothenburg
Day 7 - Rothenburg to Munich, stopping along the way at Dachau and anything that looks interesting
Day 8 through 11 - Munich with a daytrip to Salzburg
Day 12 through 14 - Prague (traveling there by train)
Day 15 - Fly Home

Okay, so what do you think? Too much? We are young and active and want to see as much as possible on this trip. I am just worried that we'll feel like we spent most of our time in a train. Please help! Many thanks!

Yes I do have some thought, but it would take to long to answer here. If you would like to e-mail me, I will respond that way. It doesn't seem like to much, it just needs to be organized differently.

Greg
Your schedule is feasible, and yes there are going to be hours on the train, but that is part of trip to Europe.
The trip from Paris to Frankfurt is about 6 hours and 20 minutes, with two changes of train. With an early start from Paris you will have ample time to drive to Wurzburg.

Munich has several days of highlights. I recently spent 4 days there and did not get to the science and technology museum, which is something that will lure me back.
A day trip to Salzburg and back to Munich is possible. The shortest travel times are 90 minutes and there are frequent trains.
However, consider that with your schedule you are going to miss Neuschwanstein and Linderhof and Bamberg.

You are also selecting Prague over Vienna and extra time in Paris.

Your shortest train time Munich to Prague is 6 hours 5 minutes with an early start and 3 train changes.
You do not say from which airport you intend to fly home. I am assuming it is Prague because you allow no time to return to Munich or Frankfurt.

I guess my thinking runs this way.
I have spent 9 days in Paris in recent years with trips to Giverny, Versailles, Fontainebleau included.
Much remains for me to see in Paris after 9 days.
With only 4 days there, you will scratch the surface but hardly see all of the highlights of Paris and environs. I also did not get in all of Munich, but part of that was because it rained all the time!!

I think it all depends on how much you want to see superficially and how much you want to see in depth.
You cannot see it all, no matter how long you stay, so I think it is a question of priorities.
I do, however, think you should discuss trip objectives more before you commit to this plan. What is it you want to see in Paris? And what is it about Prague that appeals to you more than Vienna?
At any rate, you will have enough that you do not see to entice you to return.

I actually think it's pretty good. Rather skimpy on RURAL Europe, but I realize that this is my personal preference to have more "country", a bit less city.

I have never been to Prague (nor anywhere in the Czech Republic), so I cannot comment on your concerns about the Munich-Prague trip.

Depending on your point of origination, this might not be a particularly cheap open-jaw (i.e., XXX-PAR, PRA-XXX) - - but if your heart is set on these three destination (clusters), then you get what you pay for, and there is no obvious way (that jumps out at me) to accomplish a link of the three more cheaply.

Best wishes,

Rex
Steph - I would also say the 3 locations are kind of far apart, but it sounds like you have some thought-out reason for picking those locations. Otherwise, you might consider Vienna over Prague, for example. If you like cities, and don't feel the need to see more rural locations, then your ideas work. Salzburg is a little jewel of a city, and as I recall there are classical music concerts there year-round and lots of restaurants with outdoor seating. Consider spending at least one night there; maybe you can attend a concert in one of the palaces.

If I had the 14 days and were trying to incorporate as much of what you want to do without too many hotel changes and too many long train/car rides, my itinerary would look like (shelving Prague for a later trip):

Day 1 Paris - spend night
Day 2 Paris - spend night
Day 3 Paris - spend night
Day 4 Paris - spend night
Day 5 Paris - spend night
Day 6 Pick up car & drive to Rothenburg - spend night (suggestion to skip R'burg & do 2 nights in one of the river valleys: Mosel/Rhine/Nekar)
Day 7 Rothenburg - spend night
Day 8 Drive to Fussen or Reutte area to see castles & countryside - spend night
Day 9 Fussen or Reutte area to see castles & countryside - spend night
Day 10 Drive to Salzburg (drop car)
Day 11 Salzburg
Day 12 Train to Munich - spend night
Day 13 Munich - spend night
Day 14 Munich - spend night
Day 15 Fly home

You could save some time by taking a night train direct from Paris to Frankfurt; ditto from Munich to Prague.
