Heading to Italy with a friend in May. I was able to get a business class FF ticket on United: California/Zurich. We'll spend several nights in Zurich, several nights in Lake Como area (exact destination yet to be determined) and four or five nights in Tuscany (also no specific destination yet). Can't wait!

After lots of work and wonderful input from many of you at Fodors, Larry and I, due to illness, were forced to cancel our fall, 2005 trip to Northern Italy, but have rescheduled it for May, 2006. Leaving on 5/18/06, we will be be in Northern Italy for close to 3 weeks- the lakes, the Dolomites, Venice, and Milan.

We are looking forward to our third trip to Italy. Larry has added Italian to his growing list of languages, and, as an artist, I'm looking forward to being back in bella Italy.

Hope to see some of you in May.

My son will tour Italy with a his Jesuit high school group, which has arranged a meeting with the Pope (those Jesuits have connections!), then they are traveling around Italy for two weeks on a nicely-planned itinerary. My daughter gets to spend the entire spring semester at her university's villa in Florence, along with plenty of side-trips and hopefully to Turin during the Olympics. Lucky kids! Now, Mom and Dad need to make plans for Italy, too...

I finally talked my husband into his first trip to Rome (my third). Planning on Mar. 30 - Apr 7, about to buy tickets since Delta Sky Miles appear to be untouchable.

Thanks to the keen advice I gleened from many of you Fodorites on these forums, we are going to Rome (5 nights), Montepulciano (3), Cinque Terre (3) and Venice (3) in the last half of Apil. Our first ever trip to Italy and even Europe for 2 out of 3 of us.

You cannot believe how excited we are!!!

The flights and accomodations were booked in November, travel insurance purchased, and we are now reading up and trying to learn a bit of Italian.

Will be back at you with questions about some of the details.

Thank you all again - you are performing a valuable service to travelers.

We're going to Venice, Florence and Rome (starting in Paris), in April. Which feels like forever away but is only just around the corner...

After school in Croatia for 3 months, I'm taking a ferry from Split to Ancona in June. Then trains to Rome and Venice for a few days each. Cant afford more time than that as I hope to visit other countries! Enjoy your time.

caroline_edinburgh Dec 28th, 2005 04:50 AM

Have now booked flights to Naples, 27th May-17th June : 1 week each in Naples, Ischia & our secret hideaway on the Amalfi Coast :-) Have also booked opera in Naples for 28th May ! Anyone else going ?

Brewster2 Dec 28th, 2005 07:29 AM

We are traveling to Italy Sep 11..'06. We are flying to Rome for a week , then taking a train to Florence for 4 days and then a train to Venice for 3 days. We heard that this was a good time of the year to visit Italy. We booked our hotels on Venere.com which had good selections and good rates. Has anyone used that website? We will be staying at the Marriott in Rome on Marriott points and are paying for the other hotels. We did book a hotel on the Grand Canal in Venice which was a little expensive but it may be the only time we visit Venice.

Still deciding whether I should do an 8-day trip to Italy (Rome, Florence and Venice) or 2-wks (the three above with additions to the smaller towns) ... also the timing: April vs. September.

queenofstrange Dec 29th, 2005 07:21 PM

We'll be heading off for Rome and Tuscany in April. April will probably be cold and wet - my preference would be in early September. We've been there before, and here are our highlights:

Rome - definitely do the "bernini tour" - ala Dan Browns Angels&Demons (although this book was pathetic), but don't forget SantAndrea al Quirinale!

Venice - worth a visit once, but make sure you have a good map if youre not good with directions, and check out the restaurants well off the beaten path (Osteria al Bacco on the
Fondamenta delle Cappuccine, near the Ghetto. it is closed on monday)

Sienna - a must see, especially in Sept (for the mosaics the floor in the Duomo, which are uncovered only once a year)

Florence - the pearl. get a guided tour of the uffizi if you must go there - your guide will get you tickets and you can bypass the line (try www.lebaccanti.com). don't forget the romanesque church san miniato al monte, the frescos by giotto in the back chapel are not to be missed!

Amalfi - if you're staying in positano, you must stay at la sirenuse - well worth the extravagant bucks!

not been to cinquaterra yet, but heard its a must-see.

marathongirl Dec 30th, 2005 05:51 AM

Hello!! I am brand new to the forum! I will be in Italy from August 13-19..Itinerary yet to be determined. Although it will likely be Rome and the coast. We will be coming from the UK.

We have booked to the UK...and will be booking flights to Rome this weekend...next thing will be hotels!! I am SO excited.

I am sure it will be HOT...but, hey... we have to come in August since my BF has to do a week of school in the UK anyway... although, it surely cannot be any hotter that Chicago in the summer!!

kim80525 Dec 30th, 2005 06:43 AM

Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, Amalfi Coast and a quick couple days in Rome on my way home in late April.

caroline_edinburgh Dec 30th, 2005 06:46 AM

Welcome, marathongirl !

chloer Dec 30th, 2005 08:03 AM

We have just booked a two week pilgrimage through Italy for next September/October. We are arriving in Rome, then it's off to Assisi, Siena, Florence and Venice ending with two days in Paris. Have been to Italy before but each trip is unique. 2006 will surely fly by while we're planning the intricate details. Once again, Fodorites will come in handy for useful tips.

flygirl Jan 4th, 2006 11:36 AM

Hopefully May. current plan is two weeks, re-visit Venice, Florence, Rome and do a bike trip along the coast.

nini Jan 4th, 2006 12:20 PM

We hope to have ten wonderful days in Italy in April or May. The time will be divided between Rome, Venice, and two nights in Tuscany--Orvieto? Montepulciano? Our problem now is the price of airline tickets. We have ff on Delta but they have now doubled what we need for the trip. We live in Atlanta so Delta is usually what we fly.Dlt begins direct flights to Venice in June and any ff seats are already gone. So now we have to wait and see and remain flexible --we have no problem with flight not being direct--just want to fly at a reasonable price.

whoknew Jan 4th, 2006 12:25 PM

December 2006. Rome and Venice. 3rd time for me to Rome, second time to Venice. Second time to Rome for mrwhoknew, 1st for Venice for him. Just starting to plan. I am thinking 10 days total, not including travel time.

It seems so far away!....sigh.

liana Jan 4th, 2006 01:02 PM

We are taken our grandaughter april 6 to april 17,going to Venice,Florence,Pisa and Rome.
I just got an email from the Scavi tours that they are going to be close for the days we are in rome,we are very dissapointed.

pantelia Jan 4th, 2006 01:39 PM

A group of us from work (not sure of exact numbers yet...will know this Monday) are planning a trip in October. Arriving in Rome on the 12th, train to Florence on the 14th and a week in Tuscany with day trips from there.

Perhaps a little get together (GTG if I've got my Fodor's lingo down!) is in order for anyone in Rome on those dates? I'm a newbie to the site, but that would certainly be fun!

I'm going in Sept or Oct - dates not set yet. Especially interested in the south -- happy for any recommendations. Will also visit southern France, Croatia and Amsterdam.

To Willy123 and quartknee: I'd like to ask you a few questions about Croatia. I want to go there in the fall as well but am not finding much info on how to get there economically. I can be reached directly at: [email protected]
