You have two choices for your trip. Bus/train or drive to Naples then ferry to Ischia or bus or drive to Sorrento, ferry to Capri, then ferry to Ischia. You can take your car on the ferries only in the winter.

Sorrento is closer and less hectic than Naples. But Naples has more departure and arrival times.

Yes, you can bring your car there most of the time, but I believe they do restrict cars in August...but I'm not sure of this. I know for sure that you can bring them in September and October.

I have some photos of Ischia here:
http://www.jimtardio.com/italy.html

We stayed on Ischia late September/early October and loved our hotel. Very reasonable. $75.00/night (our room had a double bed and two twin bunk beds). The price included breakfast AND dinner right on the beach. Fabulous view. Big balcony. Great staff. I am looking at the photo I took of the hotel to make out the name and I can't read it very well. Looks like Hotel Le S???ella. Maybe someone else has stayed there too and is familiar with the name. Good luck. For relaxation, go to the spa with all the pools and it's also on the beach. We had to take a taxi there.

We stayed in the Hotel San Montano. It's on a hill overlooking the sea. Has lovely pool, also spa facilities. Extensive German clientele. We ate at the hotel. Food was fine.

a friend visits Ischia every few yrs, visiting her uncle and his family.
She stays down in the Sant Angelo area,
at a Hotel Regina - something (? )on the Moranti Beach.
We tried to make it over, but had scheduling probs with the ferries to Pozzuoli.
There is a site;
www.ischia.com
