Prague. Trying to buy a flat there now, actually.

Here's my dream retirement scenario: We rent out our house to a teacher. We spend Sept/Oct/Nov around Munich, Dec/Jan/Feb in the southern part of Tuscany, Mar/Apr/May/June somewhere in France within an easy train ride to Paris. We rent an apartment in each location and finance our trip with the rent from our house, as it will be paid off. The teacher gets a house at a reasonable cost for the school year, and we go to Europe for nine months. We live in the SF Bay area, where teachers have a difficult time finding affordable housing. A win-win situation...now help me convince my husband.

I have heard that it can take up to one year to get a phone installed in France. Is this not true? Our friends who own a nice home in S. of France recently renovated it and all of the workers were Italians! My best pal (she is Scottish but married to an Italian and lives near Portofino) is trying to start up her own language school in the town where she lives. She e mailed me today and said that getting all the permits etc. has been a maze of confusion. She reminded me how every time I had to go to the post office in Florence, I would break out in a rash. Your post reminded me of this. |
Krakow - because it is the city of my heart.

High on a cliff in Marbella, Spain overlooking the mediterranean.

Calamari:
It took me 24 hours to get a phone installed in France, and I live pretty much in the boondocks. I think your friend must have France confused with Italy.I have never had anything but incredibly prompt, efficient service from any utility company or workman. |
My problem is that I haven't traveled enough yet to be sure of my picks! :)
Out of the places I have been, I would pick Salisbury, England (I'd be happy in London too), or Florence, Italy. I'd also love a little whitewashed house on Santorini. I hedge my bets because I have yet to go to Spain or the south of France, and I know I'll love them both (coming in January - so we'll see!) Karen |
Rome, but I'd make darned sure the air-conditioning was in place and functioning well before I showed up!
Other venues would include somewhere down the Amalfi coast or around Nice. But I picked Rome because I really like the cultural attributes the city offers. BC |
Considering money wasn't a problem, I wouldn't want to live anywhere for longer than six months. I would move around and experience all of Europe and beyond. I get the chills thinking about it!!!!!
|
My dream would be to live in the south of France near St. Paul de Vence and also in St. Moritz Switzerland. Really loved these areas when we were vacationing in France and Switzerland.

Like sfowler, I'm not picky - Paris apartment with view of Eiffel or Notre Dame, and a studio in Tourettes Sur Loup!
And if I may be really greedy - an apartment in Trastevere as well, please! |

If I HAD to live in Europe, I'd live where I HAD to live. That might not be where I'd most LIKE to live.
I know this is a boring answer, buti was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this question, and I refrained from posting it all week. |
2 summer homes- a chalet anywhere in the Berner Oberland region, and also a home in Brittany.
Winter in Provence Shhh, don't wake me up. |
