ira, will 1000E notes be okay?
If you send me $100,000 as good faith money, I'll get my staff working on the transfer today. |
Provence (or the Dodogne) don't interest us. We'd rather be in the "garden of France", i.e., the Loire Valley or possibly Normandy.
Bob, this isn't on Monte Bre, but here's another Ticino possibility...what do you think, loft condo or townhouse? http://lofts-tessin.com/index.htm Another possibility where we don't need to win the lottery: an apartment in the chocolate box Austrian village of Seckau. Last summer, we saw a beautifully built apartment for sale--2 big bedrooms, 1.5 baths, big, gorgeous kitchen, fireplace (all new AEG appliances), balconies with views that won't quit of the mountains and lakes, separate covered parking--all for less than $100,000. |
Wherever my wife says

Paris with a view of the Seine, Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower. I'm not picky:)
|
Money no object? Venice. Any of the neighborhoods away from the tourist mob.
|
Another vote for South Kensington. In the summer a chalet somewhere near Interlaken in Switzerland.
|
Car, good answer! Your wife has trained you well!((k))
|
It would either be in France or England. The Marais in Paris or Juan les Pins in the south. If England, London, Kensington.
|
oh, St Cirq -- until we visited the Dordogne in May I would have said Verona (which still has a warm spot in my heart...especially one of those flats in a particular yellow building looking over the Alto Adage river toward the Centro Historica....but that lovely little town of St Leon...hmmmm that could be a happy place, too
|
Nice to see there are others here voting for London besides me! Actually I might prefer one of those lovely historic cottages or smaller manor houses advertised in "Countrylife" with easy access to my old friend London Town. I can dream, can't I? :)
|
Since money is no object, Rome; without a doubt.

Hi
I'm a country boy, who needs city facilities ! And I've spent 25 yrs working in cities across the globe. I've always lived near a city : London, Birmingham, Brussels, Gothenburg, Montpellier. After 4 yrs in Sweden I realise weather is important. I'm happy here in Languedoc, 15 mins from Montpellier .......... and if I need more excitement 75 mins from the centre of Marseille. Photos of my area here : http://tlp.netfirms.com/photogall.htm Peter http://tlp.netfirms.com |
I'd probably choose a city of at least some decent size. For a large city, I'd pick Paris or Rome (with Barcelona as third choice.) For a smaller city, Venice or Nice (with Siena and Lyon as possible third choices.
If it was a non-city location, probably somewhere in the Italian lakes area/Ticino, or Tuscany. |
It's London for me. I like Kensington, too; looks like I will have a lot of Fodor neighbors. We can all meet for tea in the afternoons.
|
Sounds great, Carolyn! Brown's or the Ritz?
|
Well, if you'd have asked last year I'd have said Paris. But since it's this year and I went to Lyon and Paris in the spring I'd now pick Lyon. Great food and a big city with lots to do but not a super-tourist magnet like Paris.
I'm going to Nantes Thanksgiving Day so I may change my mind... :-) |
Uhoh..busted: I wouldn't sniff at Verona, either. Last time I was there (about 6 years ago), I swore I could easily set up shop in one of those warm town houses without another care in the world. But Italy is Italy, and France is France, and the fact is, it's sure a heck of a lot easier to get a household up and running in France than in Italy. If you want a phone line and workmen who show up to do the job, it's France you need to choose.
Maybe someday I'll be able to have a little place in Italy, too, once I'm retired and have loads of patience. Or maybe not. But until then, the Dordogne suits me fine. But Verona...what a lovely place! |
Basle, Switzerland.
|
I would like to live in erewhon. Any neighbourhood. Read Samuel Butler.
|
I would be in Iceland in a heartbeat, and I'd travel to Asia or Europe for a month in the winter. Good thing money is no object!
I would probably choose to live in Reykjavik near the harbour, as I am a city girl at heart, but I'd like a little place in the countryside as well. Not at all greedy, me. Reasons? Clean air, clean water, beautiful landscape, and that certain something that isn't really describable, but means "spiritual home". |
