Guten Tag Gabi, My wife and I are in the early stage of planning our bicycle tour for April/May of 2001. We are thinking of touring the North Frisian Islands and then our tour starts at Husum, to Flensburg and then to Lubeck. We tour alone and carry our gear with us. Do you have suggestions where we can get good maps showing bike trails? We have toured from Titisee to Koblenz to Trier to Echternach and from Heidelberg to Fussen and were able to find very good maps. We have friends who live in Delmenhorst, near Bremen, and they visit Sylt every year, we will probably meet them there. Thanks for your help.

Hi Richard,
first i want to say April/Mai is a wonderful time to enjoy our nature. Especially in the east of Schleswig-Holstein the landscape is over and over full of yellow fields (rapeseed) But you must calculate that its not warm so early. Here in the north between the big seas its often windy and sometimes rainy. I found some books and cards you can order. And if you like to give me your adress I will look here in our stores for free Informations and send you.

1) Under the e-mail [email protected] you can order a free Prospekt "Radtour 99", which includes 8 Tours and Sightseeing-Points.

2) Under www.sportbuch.de/shop/198.html
you can order "Die schönsten Radtouren zwischen Lübeck und Flensburg" 22,80 DM and "Mit dem Fahrrad durch Schleswig-Holstein" 8,80 DM

3) A cd-rom "Radrouting Deutschland Die schönsten Radfernwege und Radtouren" you can order at bookonlineshops like www.amazon.de or www.bol.de. The ISBN-Number is 3-87073-166-4. Maybe you can order in usa with this number.

and some sites to look

1) www.sh-tourist.de then click Ausflugtips, then Fahrrad-touren, then Übersichtskarte. There you can see tours and special Infos

2) www.adfc.de, then click Schleswig-Holstein. This is the site of the german bicycle-club

I hope these infos helps you. If you have any questions more, please ask.
Hi Maira,

Yes its wonderful between north-sea and east-sea. I am living in Rendsburg directly at Eider-River and the big Nord-Ostsee-Kanal only since 5 Years. So I must confess i have not been to Sylt until now (shame). But i want to in future. I am raised in Oldenburg in Holstein. Thats in the east part of Schleswig-Holstein, north of Lübeck. So i have seen more in that area.
hi Gabi,
at middle August -12-15th more or less- we are visiting the North Sea Coast, specially the Nordfriesland Kreis. I have already received some brochures but would like to know something else about which would be the best places to visit, since everything is always imposible: is Friedrichstadt really such a nice town? What about the Eiderstadt peninsula? and Husum worth a visit? going north -still in mainland- what about Bredstedt and the rest (Niebüll, Klanxbüll, Leck...).
And regarding to the islands, do you prefer any of them -Sylt, Föhr, Amrum-?, I have seen there are some day trips through some of the Halligen, do you recommend it?
Thanks for all, and do not hesitate to answer all the questions, if you can help with some of them, thanks again.

Hi Jim,

i recommended Friedrichstadt. I have been there several times and i love it. You can make a "Grachtentour" which is a guided boattour and after that you can rent a little boat for your own or make a drive with a double-bike. Friedrichstadt looks like a "little Amsterdam" with all the little waterstreets, you will like it.
St.-Peter-Ording is a little city with a beach. You can eat good and fresh fish. If the water is far away (Ebbe) you can make a "Wattwanderung" its walking in wet sand. This tours are available by a guide or you walk by your own. But be careful, the water is coming fast, lol. From the islands i heard much good about Amrum. You can rent a bycicle, if you want. Its natural there. Sylt is more touristic and expensive. There you could see the high-society from germany. Many actors with ferraries and porsches, lol.
Husum is a pretty city too. You will like it.

If you go to www.altavista.de and type "Nordfriesland" you can see many websites.

Do you have a rental car and do you come with kids? If so i can recommended some amusementparks.
thanx gabi, for your information, and, as you asked me, we are just two travelling.
North of Husum, do you know the Bredstedt-Niebüll area?
Is there any danger visiting the Halligen in August?
To finish, we are thinking on a day cycle trip from the isle of Sylt to Röm in Denmark, retourning to the mainland on the damm, and passing the border, getting back to Niebüll more or less. What do you think about Röm...?
Oh, I forgot, for another day trip across the border, I've heard Ribe might be interesting, but that there is not much more in South Jutland. Is it true?

Hi! I am traveling with my family (4 of us) to Germany this July. We will be staying in Hamburg for 3 weeks while my husband works. The kids (14 and 10) and I will be taking day trips from Hamburg. Any suggestions? I have planned on visiting Brennen, Lubeck, Luneburg, Celle, Schleswig, Grosar, and Brenenhaven ( and a little farther Hannover). Are these good places to visit? Would you recommend any other place where we could go for the day from Hamburg. Any suggestions on what to do in Hamburg?

Thanks,
Nina

Jim, Röm is lovely if you like the beach. It has one of the biggest beaches in Europe, similar to St. Peter Ording. It's a lovely area to bike too as it is very flat. Husum is very nice and well worth a visit. Although I've been to Bredstedt and Niebüll, I don't remember much about it. Niebüll I only remember as a starting point of a train ride to Sylt. You are aware that the dam from the mainland to Sylt is only for the train, there is no road or track for bikes or walkers. Ribe is supposed to be nice, I heard that as well, but have never been myself so far. I hope you enjoy your time in the north of Germany.

Nina,
Another day trip you could take from Hamburg is a boatride to Helgoland, which is an island at the mouth of the river Elbe. This is only to be recommended when the weather is nice and calm as the island is quite far out in the North Sea and it can be quite a bumpy ride. There are several possibilities to get there which you can check out at the tourist information in Hamburg (there is one at the main train station). If your kids like amisement parks there is one called "Hansaland" which is north-east of Hamburg and could be a possible destination for a day trip. I hope you have a great time.
