I will be traveling by train from Naples to Venice in May. In checking the Trenitalia schedule I see that I have two options when making train connections. One of those connections is in Rome but there is only a 15 minute window for making this connection. My other option is leaving Naples an hour earlier and making a connection in Bologna with about a 30 minute connection time.

For those of you who know, is it hard for "newbies" to navigate the Termini station in Rome to make a connection in 15 minutes? I am leaning toward the Bologna connection in order to play it safe.

It depends on the type of train you're taking from Naples to Rome as to whether or not that will be enough time. Trains in Italy seem much better at leaving on time than arriving on time.

I would play it safe and do the Bologna connection, epecially if you haven't been to the station in Rome before.

Having said that, we once had a 6 minute time frame to make a connection out of Milan, and made it, so we've had some success in chancing it.

We'd line to take the fast trains on both of the legs of our journey. We are new to train travel in Italy and have not navigated the system before. I am a bit intimidated by Termini station and worried about finding our way to our train to Venice once we exit the train from Naples.

If the train is delayed in any way, we would not have much time to find and board our connection. If we miss our connection, we would have the trouble of trying to get ticketed on the next train to Venice. I am definitely considering the Bologna connection.

have to agree with surfergirl... italian trains arrive late very often but leave nearly always on time... do the bologna connection!
P.S. Termini station is easy to navigate also for a "newbie"
