Venice - Second time we stayed at the Danieli. We would probably suggest a more low profile hotel as we didn't dine once in the hotel or lounge in the luxurious lobby or roof terrace. There's too much to see in Venice and most of the time you're out just being a tourist.

First time to Venice we stayed at Hotel Columbina in Venice. Understated elegance.

Capri - Quisisana.

You can go to jetsetting.net to see some reviews, etc.

Good morning, Ray
In Rome, have used the Hotels PLAZA and De La Ville, which are four stars and the
Internazionale which is three. The later two are located on the via Sistina and thePlaza on the Corso, all
in a very good location.
In Venice, have used the Saturnia which
is a four star just last month and prior
the three star Do Pozzi, another but
about a block further down is the Ala.
In Capri, used the Europe Palace, a five star atop the island, however had lunch at the Syrene and it
seemed very impressive for a three star
hotel, at least they had a very good
dining room and also do have a swimming
pool. Check into www.capri.it for
hotel listings and www.caprionline.com/syrene./index.html.
for Venice listings use www.venicinfo.it
and Rome use www.italyhotels.it/
Good surfing, Richard of La Grange Park, Il...PS have no knowledge of the Punta
Tragara or the Gambrinus in order to comment. rjv
Ray,
Spent 5 days in Rome in Sept. Stayed at the Hotel Piazza di Spagna on Via Mario de Fiori. Nice, quaint hotel. We had a large room. European type bathroom, tho, ie small. I'm 6'4" and felt like Gulliver in the shower stall.
English speaking staff was very helpful.
I think we got the room for around $125 US/night.
One block from some great shopping and 2 blocks from the Spanish Steps.

In Venice we stayed at Hotel Panada which was a left, a right and a short left from Piazza San Marco. Small but modern rooms. Great staff and great location. Good breakfast. Think it went for under $150 US. Had a great time there.

Have fun. We will be going back soon.
Kal

We stayed at the Hotel American in Venice this past September, and loved it. It's across the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district, so the crowds are fewer and less dense. We had a room in front overlooking the canal (NOT the Grand Canal) for $200/night. It was very good sized for a Venetian hotel! We enjoyed the American very, very much, and recommend it to all. The web site is: <http://www.hotelamerican.com>.

P.S. To get to San Marco, you can either walk across the Accademia Bridge (like most tourists do) or take the traghetto across the Grand Canal (a gondola which just goes between two points) for ITL 700. Look for the "traghetto" signs, or ask at the hotel how to get to the landing.

Enjoy!

Ray-
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Kette in Venice this Sept. It has a great location, very close to the San Marco Vaporetto stop, 5 minutes from the Piazza San Marco and 2 minutes to the American Express Office (in case you run out of lire!). It was very charming, the staff was very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was very good as well. We had a king size bed in a very elegantly decorated room (the bathroom was very small). We purchased a package so I am not sure how much it was, but I am certain that is was well under $200 per night.
