Hostel security

If I stay in a mixed room in a hostel....what keeps other kids from stealing my things while I am sleeping?

My husband stayed in a hostel and they had security cameras in all rooms except the bathroom.

If there's a locker, you can use that (but bring your own lock). You can use a moneybelt to sleep with your passport and money, and assume that no one is likely to steal your clothing. Thefts at hostels are not particularly common, but I wouldn't leave any electronic devices or jewelry around. I'd also arrange to get a place with a locker.

Some people wear their money belts at all times, even take it into the shower then put it on a hook there. Some people use various methods of locking backpacks and/or chaining them to something.

I suggest you read over on Lonely Planet's website their forum called The Thorn Tree which has loads of people who travel the hostel and backpacking way.
