Good point about the Bank Holiday. (I'm really in England for my niece's wedding, on the 29th, so it hasn't registered with me.) Maybe Sep 1st instead.

Hi Janis,
We will be in Edinburgh when you are, but we are going to the Tattoo on the 27th. We could meet for a drink or something on the 25th. We will be doing a day trip that day, but should be home in the late afternoon.
Jane

Loved your report, JanisJ - thank you!

"I leave my bag and head down Ebury Street to William Curley - my favorite chocolate shop. There may be better -- but I haven't tried them all . . . yet. "

Paul A Young, Camden Passage, nearest tube, Angel. Out of this world chocolates from classics like the salt caramel bars to marmite truffles. My favourite chocolate shop in the UK.

I very much enjoyed your report. We will be returning to London next year, and your report just makes me more eager to return!

Hi JANISJ,

Absolutely fabulous report. Just found it. Loved your historical exploration following in your father's footsteps. Wow, was Amsterdam and environs really crowded! I recall seeing "Night Watch" on a winter trip when the Rijks was busy, but not thronged back in the late 90s.

Of course, I am always interested in your London adventures. I hope that someday our paths cross over there. I am off to Dublin for a week in a few days. Thanks again...

Wow that was great to score such a wonderful upgrade then!

I always enjoy your trip reports and looking forward to the next one. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Looks like maybe Sept 1 might work giving everyone at least one day to get settled in/over the jet lag???

jane1144:

I arrive at EDI in the late afternoon on the 25th but it will be after 3 flights so I have no idea what State I'll be in (physical/psychological OR geographic ) Maybe we could plan on meeting up in the early evening and you can keep waking me up I-|

latedaytraveler: Have fun in Dublin - are you going anywhere else in Ireland?

gailscout Jun 8th, 2015 08:16 AM

Sept 1 works for me as I'm going to Buckingham Palace on the 2nd. I'm staying in Covent Garden.

LCBoniti Jun 8th, 2015 08:33 AM

Loved this, janisj. I'm headed to London next week (*happy dance*) and this has added to the excitement.

elberko Jun 8th, 2015 08:39 AM

Sept. 1 works for me, too.
Busy soaking up info for my trip.

jane1144 Jun 8th, 2015 09:11 AM

janisj
I feel your pain! Maybe we can check in again closer to the event and exchange contact info. Then we can check in on the day to see if anyone is up for a drink. If not, hopefully there will be another time down the road. Meantime, thank you for this report. We followed my Grandfather's footsteps in the First Word War when we went to Vimy, France a couple of years ago. I bought my poppy for him.

thursdaysd Jun 8th, 2015 12:31 PM

Sep 1st sounds good. I'll be in Covent Garden too, at LSE's Northumberland House.

ElendilPickle Jun 8th, 2015 01:13 PM

Thanks, janisj. This was fun!

Great report!

latedaytraveler Jun 9th, 2015 03:55 AM

Hi again JANISJ,

"Have fun in Dublin - are you going anywhere else in Ireland?" Not really. Unfortunately, I only have a week this time.

I am staying in the heart of the city - Buswells Hotel - between Trinity College and St. Stephen's Green. It gets very good reviews. Have many things planned, mostly around James Joyce and Bloomsday. Also museums, libraries, pub crawls, historic sites, River Liffey cruise, book stores and the like.

I have signed on for a half day excursion a bit north to Malahide and Howth, and a six hour bus jaunt (following in the steps of Leopold Bloom, hero of Joyce's ULYSSES) to the south coast of Dublin including Sandy Mount and Dun Laoghaire.

I have only passed through Dublin on earlier trips to Ireland. Being of "pure" Boston Irish stock, I welcome the opportunity to really explore the city. Leaving today. :)

It looks like possible GTGs in Edinburgh on the 25th and London Sept 1 - I'll start a new thread in a few weeks to see if any of the locals can join us.

gailscout Jun 14th, 2015 08:34 PM

Looking forward to it! I'm surprised you had the energy to type after that Warriors win!
