Hiking Trip! Need some advice
I am thinking about doing a week or so in the mountians of Tirol next March, early April.

I have always heard of the hikers cabins that exist along the way in the Austrian, Swiss or Southern German Mountains. I am not interested in mountain climbing, but rather any info that people have about all day hikes and finding accomodations at huts and Alms along the way.

How rustic are these cabins? Is there food and drink available? How about sleeping accomodations?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Mark

Pretty rustic. Almost all serve food and drinks. Many offer bunks in big rooms and some offer private rooms. Generally there are no showers available and maybe no running water for your use. The best thing is to get a good hiking map, plot your route and call the huts you want to overnight at. Many might not be open in early April and those that are would appreciate reservations.

Excellent! Thanks for the quick response.

That is exactly what I am looking for.

I am looking for a webpage or an e-mail address that can give me more info about the various trails or hikes that are open for a trip like this. Any thoughts?

I bought this book a year ago when considering the same thing:

Walking Austria's Alps: Hut to Hut
by Jonathan Hurdle

I was discouraged from trying it in early June after reading it. Don't recall if it was just the weather, or if the huts weren't even open till later.

There a quite a lot of mountain accommodations on the Swiss trails. They vary from mountain huts to quite nice hotels with private rooms and good restaurants. I did a quick search and came up with this:
http://www.bergtourismus.ch/e/huetten.cfm
You will have a great time..

Mark: we did the walkers haute route in 15 days last Sept. (the Valais region in Switzerland and used a lot of huts, see my trip report under Chamonix to Zermatt hike). I've never been to the Tyrol, but I believe the Swiss Alps mountain trails would not really be hike-able until mid-June at the earliest and many huts not open yet unless they cater to the skiers. Too much snow still. You can find good guide books for hiking the alps at adventurebooks.com Best of luck.
