Help yk choose where to go on her honeymoon in Oct?

Hi-

I am getting married in mid-October 2005, and now starting to decide where to go for our honeymoon. Here are the details:

1. We will have about 10-11 full days (not including travel to/from the US).
2. We prefer sightseeing over lying on the beach.
3. We would like places with still reasonable weather (this will be the last 2 weeks of October).
4. I prefer visiting places that I have not been to before. I've been to:
UK (including Scotland & Wales), Paris/Loire, Benelux, Germany, Italy (big 3 + Amalfi Coast), Austria (Salzburg + Innsbruck), Switzerland and Norway. I have also been to Denmark, Sweden, Spain & Portugal when I was a kid.

Here are the contenders:

1. Prague, Vienna, Budapest - Is 10-11 days enough (we'll fly open-jaw)? How's the weather in late Oct?

2. Venice, Lakes, Milan - How's the weather in the Italian lakes in late Oct?

3. Sicily + Malta - I'm unsure of the logistics of getting there (I assume I'll fly into Rome)

4. Greece (Athens + Islands, esp Cyclades) - Is 10-11 days enough? How are the logistics of Greek ferries in late Oct? Are they frequent and reliable (I don't want to be stuck on an island.)

5. Ireland - If we rent a car, will we be able to see the entire country (including Northern Ireland, Giant's Causeway is a must) in 10-11 days? Is the weather bad in late Oct?

6. Southern France

We'll be flying AA from Dallas, so most destinations require 1 change, or even 2 changes.

Thanks in advance any suggestions or inputs you have.

Would you consider South America?

Quite a few friends have suggested S.Am. I am a Europhile for the time being and would rather stick with Europe for the honeymoon.

Hi yk,

For 11 days, I suggest fly into Venice 3 days, train to Florence 4 days with a daytrip to Siena, train to Rome, fly home.

Happy honeymoon

yk,

Congratulations.

You have a nice list already -- can't fault any of those choices.

My $.02 would be: Fly into Dalmatia (Dubrovnik), head up the coast to Istria, and finish up in Venice.

Did you see the Times article a week ago on Croatia?

http://travel2.nytimes.com/mem/trave...54C0A9639C8B63

I keep meaning to read it, but I keep forgetting.

Croatia's secret seems to be long out for Europeans (with lowcost carriers that fly there). I think a poster here (tracy?) mentioned that she will be traveling there with her husband.

I still haven't been, but imagine how exciting it would be for you to tell people that you went to Croatia (and got to see Diocletian's palace, etc.).

I thought about listing Croatia also as one of the contenders. One of my acquaintances' sister just went there for her honeymoon.

I think for now I'd still rather go to some place more "popular".

Did she enjoy her honeymoon?

I think that you underestimate the appeal of Croatia. It'll make you seem like the hippest person in Dallas instantly.

But then, maybe they don't know about Croatia in Dallas, in which csae you'll look merely stupid.

(I'm just joking.)

By the way, regarding the Italian Lakes, I think that peak ferry service ends around Oct. 2, 2005:

http://www.bellagio.co.nz/

I asked about this last year when I traveled in the fall, and I forget what people told me regarding the feasibility of the Italian Lakes. In the end I didn't go.

I've a sneaking suspicion that late October will be too late for the Lakes.

As for Greece, you should probably check the flight schedules on Olympic and Aegean. That'll give you a sense as to how popular the islands are in late October. If there're not that many flights, then I don't think that it'd be too feasible.

Congratulations!

First choice: SICILY (Sicily alone, because it would be hard to cover much of Sicily if you squeeze in Malta as well in just 10 or 11 days)

Another choice: Crete or another island of your choice that has enough sightseeing (It might be hard to do Athens plus two different groups of islands in just 10-11 days. If using ferries, you are limited by their schedules. sometimes flying isn't that much more expensive, considering the savings in time. But flights may be delayed because of windy weather at that time of year.)

Other suggestion not listed: a little bit of Turkey

In conclusion, SICILY!

I'd vote for number 6.

Whatever your decision, congratulations on your new life in marriage... and...

Best wishes,

Rex

Rex- I thought you would vote for No. 2. May I ask why you vote for No. 6?

cmt- I knew you would vote for Sicily. I kind of think that 10-11 days would be too much time in Sicily, and since Malta isn't that far, I figured I can hop over and check out the Caravaggio painting.

111op- Can you plan my trip for me? BTW, the acquaintance's sister lives in Manhattan.

I think that rex has a soft spot for France.

Also I think that the weather in Southern France will be better than the weather in Northern Italy during that time.

Well, you know, I've to plan my trip in September. But there'll sadly be no more no weekends after Labor Day. Maybe I can plan yours for you. But would you trust someone who takes the wrong folders to a meeting to plan your honeymoon? I wouldn't.

I've been to northern Italy (Milan) area and to Lugano (Swiss Ticino) in mid to late October for the last few years and the weather has always been terrific--sunny, warm (verging on hot one year). So I vote for itinerary number 2.
OR instead of southern France alone, I would pick Burgundy and one part of southern France instead...Burgundy for good food, good wine (pinot noir being my favorite wine), beautiful autumn scenery and then on to Provence for four or five nights at a romantic bastide in or near one of the smaller towns.

Lugano is accessible by train. But if she picks a place like Bellagio, how frequently will the ferries run?

Or is that not a problem?
