Help with Sicily
We wanted to go to Greece this summer but seems like it's not a good time to go because of Olympics so now we're thinking about Sicily. Where would you base yourself in Sicily??? We've only been there for one day on a cruise and went to Taromina. How is the best way to get there from US? Do we fly into Rome ? I've tried to search Sicily on this forum but can't get it to come up. Thanks for any suggestions

I think you should decide whether you want to fly to Palermo or Catania. Then, through the airline or a travel agent or a site like Orbitz or Expedia, put in your requested "from" and "to" cities and see what you get. Sometimes you will fly to Milan and connect, and sometimes to Rome and connect. So long as the connection is adequate and the price is good and you begin and end where you want to begin and end, I would not have any preference between connecting in Rome or in Milan.
The search function is not very good, but you should get a list of threads if you search for Sicily. If it didn't work again, try a few minutes later. I just tried it and it worked for me. There are a lot of good threads on Sicily. You might also search for threads by GAC for some very good, precise advice.
Re where to base yourself, it depends on how you want to travel around (rented car, or public transportation), how long you'll be there, whether you want to see highlights of the island or focus on one section of it, and which places you are determined to see and which other places you're thinking of seeing.

You don't mention how long you will spend there, but don't forget Lipari and the Aeolian Islands are part of Sicily too -- one of the lovliest parts, in fact.
Taormina, Siracusa, Palermo, and Agrigento seem to be the big four, and are all worthwhile. If you want to do some beaching, then possibly Cefalu.
We learned that public transportation is a little tricky there. We started that way, but once we got to Siracusa found we'd lose almost a full day trying to get to Agrigento. So we rented a car for a few days and drove it. We were glad we did. I'd consider flying into and out of Palermo, getting a car when you leave there and make a circle -- but do try to include Lipari if you have time.
I can't imagine why if you put Sicily in the search blank and click Italy and then search, you wouldn't get tons of posts!!

Cheapest way would probably be to fly into London Heathrow and then the next day take a flight from London Stansted to Palermo via Ryanair(.com). If you have plenty of cash then just fly into Palermo (I don't like Catania and wouldn't even really want to fly into that city).
Sicily is great. If you're there in the summer you'll want to be on beaches, so check out Eraclea Minoa (southern Sicily), Fontane Bianche (near Siricusa), Mondello (near Palermo), and San Vito lo Capo (between Trapani and Palermo).
