Help requested with : Hotels with good access in Lucerne and Interlake area

We will be traveling to Switzerland in end of July for 8 days. Do not have the luxury of lengthy planning and research, unfortunately. Will be flying into Zurich.Trying to keep 2 bases for 3 nights each in BO (Lucerne/Interlaken or even Montreux which is further aways I guess) area and 1 base near Venice. Flying out of Milan.
With not much time left for booking hotels, can you suggest for good bases around those areas which are decent hotels for stay with 2 kids and not very pricey, close to train stations. Plan to do more train trips, walking tours than lifts. Read that Bernina express is most scenic so would like to take a trip on it. Not sure if we can fir Glacier express in our trip.
Is booking.com the best way to go?

Thanks and looking forward to your valuable advice.

Hi travelwith2kids,

If you want to base in the Berner Oberland, or better yet, right in the Jungfrau region, forget about Montreux (on Lake Geneva in western Switzerland) or Luzern (in central Switzerland). I would suggest you base in one of the car-free towns such as Wengen or Mürren -- the towns that allow cars are really overwhelmed with tour busses and the off-loaded day-tripping passengers.

A website to help:

www.myjungfrau.ch

You can do a search for all hotels on your dates and see what's still available.

Yes, the Bernina Express is one of the most scenic train lines in Switzerland -- but unfortunately it's on the other side of the country. It would take you 8 hours just to get to the start of the train ride, then a few hours to ride it, then 8 hours to get back. The same with the Glacier Express.

With only 3 nights, you won't have any problem finding enough to do and see in the Jungfrau area; there's no need to go elsewhere.

Have fun as you plan!

I must have misunderstood -- I thought you had time for TWO bases, each of about 3 nights.

If you ARE looking for 2 bases, you might consider 3 nights or (much better) 4 nights in the Bernese Oberland. With limited time and children in tow, you might want to give particular attention to options in Lauterbrunnen, which suited my needs in that area exceedingly well, but Wengen, Murren, and even Interlaken are also options. In Lauterbrunnen, I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Staubbach :

For your other base, it really depends on what YOU want to see and experience, but you might consider Lucerne -- beautiful (if sometimes overrun by tourists) and easy access to some interesting things (including things that young folk might enjoy). Just something to consider!

Good luck!

Sorry for the confusion.
We fly into Zurich at 10 am on day 1, we have 9 nights , but the 9th night we need to be in Milan to take the flight back home on the morning of day 10.
Trying to split 6 nights in Switzerland and 2 near Venice. Lake Garda or Lake Camo plus Venice are on now and anything else we will get to see in Italy is a bonus.
If Switzerland hotels end up too expensive, we might do 5 there and 3 in Italy too. Just thought kids might enjoy Switzerland more and then we could do a more concentrated trip of Italy later in the coming years.

Would 4 day flex swiss pass with family card be a good idea? From the blogs I understood no need to get any passes for Italy.

Thank you.

Hi again,

You need to nail down your itinerary first -- where to stay, which excursions/hikes/train trips you'll take. And then you can start looking for the best value for your travel.

Have fun!

If you start out in Zurich is does not take you 8 hours to get to the start of the Bernina Express route in Chur. However, if you take that train you end up in Tirano which is about 2 hours north of Milan by rail. IOW, you've pretty much gotten yourself OUT of Switzerland and would end up better off IMO spending the rest of the time in Italy.

You could certainly start OUT going to the Bernese Oberland and if you did that then yes, you would be a much LONGER way from the start of the Bernina Express route.

Frankly, I would go to the BO and then drop down into Italy from there and forget doing either the Glacier or the Bernina.

I have an impression that you are still struggling with your itinerary. When you make up your mind consider Ameron Hotel Flora in Luzern, Hotel Staubbach in Lauterbrunnen and Golf Hotel Rene Capt in Montreux. All are great and highly recommended. We have never had any problems making hotel reservations through www.booking.com.
