Help! Need information on distances from Avignon to Nice, Monaco etc.

We are planning on renting a villa in the Avignon area and exploring the area for a week. We would also like to go down to the Riviera and see Nice, Monaco, etc. Is it too far a drive to go for the day and explore that area? Would we be better to divide our time between Avignon and the Riviera or just spend a night there. Any help would be appreciated. About how long would it take us to drive? Thanks

For any driving trip such as you are planning, you should get familiar with one or more of the following excellent web resources:

www.viamichelin.com
www.mappy .com

or

www.shellgeostar.com

Yuo can find all the driving info you need there.

But short answer: Avignon is too far away to serve as a base for the Cote d'Azur.

Best wishes,

Rex
also depends what time of year you go, as the Riveria and St Tropez area can be wall to wall cars and crawling during the summer. We went in September and it was still crazy, although not as bad. I would say even with no traffic, it is too far, and would try to spend a couple of days right on the Riveria...we stayed at a trailer campground right next to St Tropez (Port Grimaud) highly recommend it, we will go back next year, family orientated but very nice and relaxed, with bar on beach and within walking distance of the town, plus has ferry to Nice, Monaco, St Tropez...

It's not too far for a one day visit... the drive from Avignon to Nice takes a little over three hours (if you drive the speed limit). But there is so much to see around here (Avignon area) that I would suggest that you save the Riviera for another visit.

PB

Thanks for the information. We are going in October 2003. Any ideas where would be a good spot to stay for a night if we decide to go that route and ideas for a reasonable hotel or B&B.
