Get in line BEHIND me....seriously, when you get to THE GATE you should volunteer to give up your seat...and do this as soon as the gate opens for "business." This does not mean you will be asked not does it mean that if asked you have to comply.....if you are asked that is when you make sure you understand the compensation, if any, that is beuing offered.
It usually does not help to do this at the check-in counter because they often have no idea how many people are going to show up..but the gate will know and it is the people at the gate, NOT at the check-in counter who make the "bumping" decisions.

With trans-Atlantic flights and some carriers, it makes some sense to inquire about this at the check-in counter, too. (They may even ask you at that point.) The reason is because if they choose to start their volunteer list at check-in, you want to make sure you're on the list. You may not get bumped until the aircraft is ready to close the boarding door.

Thanks, Isabel, for our flight back to Ireland this September!
