The website http://www.trenitalia.com
is pretty easy to navigate (most in English) just start to place your order and you'll see when to choose 1st or 2nd class. You will also get to pick your seats. I've used it a few times and then just picked my tickets up at an automated kiosk at the train station.

Did you have to register your VISA #.

I keep trying to book and to no avail.

For what dates? You can't buy tickets more than 60 days in advance.
