Has anyone been to the Eurochocolate festival in Perugia?
We're going to be in Bologna for the month of October and hence will be there when the Annual Eurochocolate festival takes place in Perugia – Fri., Oct. 14 - Sun., Oct. 23. I read that that the best day to go is the first Sunday of the festival because during the day artists create sculptures out of huge chocolate blocks. It sounds like an interesting thing to go to, but I'm wondering if it's a zoo. Might it be better to go during the week, when it would be less crowded? We'd probably rent a car and perhaps make it an overnight trip, also visiting Assisi and/or San Marino (I'd welcome other suggestions) and probably NOT staying in Perugia. I read that "During the two weekends of the festival, a trolley, known as the Chocotram, will connect the two main piazzas of the city, so that you can park your vehicle nearby and hop on it. " so it sounds like it wouldn't be unreasonable to have a car.

I've not been to the festival, but for parking, you'll want to park in one of the lots in the lower part of town. We parked where you take escalators up to the city center.
We didn't take to Perugia. Too big for our tastes. But admittedly we saw it on a rainy Sunday where the city seemed kind of grim. Festival or not, I think there are others places in Umbria that are much more pleasant to visit, e.g., Spello, Gubbio, Montefalco, Bevagna and Assisi to name a few.
For an overnight with a car, I'd pick Montefalco. Eat dinner at L'Alchemista and enjoy some of Umbria's finest wines and some gorgeous views.

I have. We were there on Sunday afternoon. I didn't think it was too crowded nor was there a long wait to buy food/chocolate. We parked right by the train station, didn't have a problem finding a parking spot. The walk from the parking lot was very nice, not too far. Overall, a nice day to spend the day with our Italian friends.
I love Assisi, I am not one to cry but I couldn't help cry during the mass, it was in latin, which we stumbled upon. The town is very charming, I also think Perugia is beautiful, the outer part is a little bit deceiving, inside there is a lot to charm a person.

cafegoddess - Do you think it is worth going to the chocolate festival? I'm not particularly a chocoholic, but it sounded like something interesting to do. We would certainly try to see some of the other things in the area too.
