bit late now probably, but perhaps another year. Sithonia is very nice but very isolated. The only really good hotel at Porto Carras is in the process of being upgraded which it needs. Have you thought of Kassandra peninsula. We live there for five months each year. If you go in May, June or September/October the weather is lovely, sometimes too hot, and it is not too busy. No nightclub type entertainment but lots of tavernas etc. Good hotel is Pallini Beach (9 storey, but inside it is lovely),. We went there for 20 years before we started to rent a house last year. We still go for a few days each year just to see old friends.

Has anyone been to Gerakini in Halkidiki? Is there enough to do for a 2-week summer break in 2001? We are fairly active - like good tavernas, bars, cycling (bike hire needed though) and sandy beaches. I have tried doing a search on Gerakini but every web site I found seems to concentrate on Kassandra resorts. Shall we ditch Gerakini and aim for Hanioti or Pefkohori in Kassandra instead. We will be travelling from England. Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

jason

Gerakini - so so!! Quite isolated, would need a car to find tavernas etc.

As a regular (over 21 years) visitor to Halkidiki, we always stay on the Kassandra peninsula. The resorts of Hanioti and Pefkochori are very nice, but very busy. Not so much with discos etc, but just lots of people, including many Greeks. We used to stay at the Pallini Beach Hotel near Kallithea. It is a nine storey hotel, but dont let that put you off. Inside has been refurbished two years ago and it is lovely. Food is also very good for such a large hotel. It is also on the beach and has a pool, and is surrounded by lovely gardens.

We now live in Halkidiki for five months each year, but we live on the other side of Kassandra where the beaches are not quite so good and sandy, but it is quieter. Having said that, resorts at Hanioti, Pefkochori(very large), Kriopigi (very quiet and miles down a steep hill to the beach!) , Polichrono (mainly apartments) are very good and not too busy in May, June, Sept, Oct. July is OK but August is a no no as all the Greeks turn up for their two week holidays and it is mad (like most of the islands in August). Don't go to Fourka - it is very flat, unimaginative and too large in my opinion. Another nice little place is Siviri. We stayed there a couple of times on a last minute booking and stayed at the Argo hotel which is small apartment type, with a swimming pool, only five minutes walk from the beach. Hope you find somewhere you like. If you want really isolated go for the tip of the peninsula at Paliouri. Or try Sani Beach area which is lovely, sandy beaches, one large hotel and several villa type hotels - but need a car if you want to explore other villages.

Let me know if you want any info on any particular place in Halkidiki.

We have been round Sithonia peninsula but there is not much to do and you definitely need a car to go anywhere.

Also been to the MounT Athos peninsula, but again very isolated indeed.

Jane
