Hadrian's Wall

Has anyone heard of any organized walking or hiking tours, or tours of any kind, along Hadrian's Wall?

One I have heard good things about is www.intrepidtraveler.com/hadrian.html

I don't do organized walking tours since walking anywhere in the UK is simple. But a lot of folks want to be in a group.

You will find that some of the best companies do not do group tours along Hadrian's wall - but rather "self-guided" where they move your luggage and arrange accomodations, but the walking is on your own.

one of these is www.xplorebritain.com

I typed 'Hadrian's Wall walking tour' into the Google search engine and a whole lot of sites came up. A few are listed here:

http://lorrypatton.com/travel/news/2598-54.html

http://www.intrepidtraveler.com/hadrian.html

http://www.midastours.co.uk/t102a.html

http://xplorebritain.com/england.asp?viewPage=4

http://www.contours-hiking-tours.com...-wall-walk.htm

http://www.sherpa-walking-holidays.c...ain/whwdos.htm

http://www.explorebritain.btinternet.co.uk/ha06.htm

This website has lots of good Hadrian's Wall links (scroll down):
http://worldheritage.bigtome.com/big...ian's_Wall

If you do a search on Google, you will turn up a lot of info on a Hadrian's Wall tour.

Today's NY Times Travel section has an article on Hadrian's Wall and gives two websites: www.hadrians-wall.org and www.nationaltrail.co.uk/hadrianswall.
Not sure if you can access the article itself online but you can try. nytimes.com
Hope this helps,

I walked about 70 km of the Hadrian Wall path back in early June. As Janis pointed out, there are people who will arrange accomodation and luggage transfer. I just did it on my own by basing myself at a couple of places and using the local buses to get to starting points and back from end points. I didn't choose my locations quite well enough, so I spent more time than I should have on buses, but it worked out ok anyway.

I'll be glad to answer any questions.

Friends of mine walked the length of the wall independently this summer, carrying their packs and using the Hadrian's Wall bus that runs druing the summer. They said it worked out quite while, so there's an option if you can pack light and backpack.

I've just returned from a week on Hadrian's Wall (Newcastle to Brampton) - fabulous! Tulie has probably organized a trip already but I'd be happy to give information to anyone who has questions. We organized the trip ourselves, hiked with backpacks, and stayed in B&Bs and youth hostels.

Any of the UK walking magazines will give you dozens of ads at the back. I'll get this month's and check them out if you want.

the mags are Country Walking, Train and TGO

We are planning to do this in early fall 2005, using the "self-guided" option of having our luggage moved from place to place. For those of you that have done this, are the inns/hotels/B&Bs along pet-friendly? We'll be taking our cocker spaniel with us. Also, how did the weather cooperate? I suppose we should plan on packing the GoreTex. My husband's mum is a Geordie, so we plan to combine this trip with a brief exploration of Newcastle.
Also, on the self-guided tours, at the end, do the tour companies drive you back to your starting point...what's the best place to leave your car before embarking on the hike? Are the cars ok there or are break-ins or car theft a growing problem?
Thanks!

I just booked a trip on www.sherpavan.com using the option of luggage transport while selecting my own accommodations according to my own planned route. I am starting in Newcastle and ending in Carlisle. In addition, the main Hadrians Wall website (http://www.hadrians-wall.org ) lists places to stay and whether they are pet-friendly. The luggage company specifically says they don't drive you back to the original point of departure, but suggest the local trains and buses are very good for this. There are suggested places for leaving your car, and sometimes the first inn you stay at will let you leave your car for a week or so.

BTilke, the Hadrian's Wall Bus (AD 122) is extremely convenient, but will probably only have Sunday service in the fall (as opposed to daily service in the summer). Otherwise you can use the local buses and rail service. The trains were excellent and fast (too fast, considering how long it took to walk!) but the stations were often not convenient to the Trail. Check this out in advance; you may need a cab or an extra few hours' walk to get to a station.

We did a 6 mile round trip walk from the fort at Housesteads.

The walk along that section is very up and down, rocky, and very slippery if wet. It goes thru sheep pasture.

If you would like to do this walk and get a souvenir patch of the walk, contact the British Walking Federation.

Tulia, I just received an excellent package via snail mail from Hadrians wall country web site. It had lists of guided walks and such. I would suggest STRONGLY, that you send away for the packet of info. It is chock full of stuff and it got here in about 5 days!
