Actually, you don't need a guide -- you can use an audio guide. But here are some of the recent threads about guides at Pompeii:

Hi John,
I used an audio guide on my second visit to Pompeii. I was completely happy with the level of detail it provided and with the ease of use.
At the entrance a guide approached me asking if I wanted to have a guided tour. He asked me how long I wanted to spend and you should have seen his eyebrows shoot up when I answered "probably about 4 -5 hours"!
My first visit was 2 1/2 hours and my second visit was 4 1/2 so you can be the judge of how much detail you might want in comparison to my interests.
Pompeii is huge so if your time is very limited, maybe you would enjoy a tour.
Buon viaggio!

We used a guide and loved every minute. He was very good and there were only four of us in our group.
His name was Nello and he came recommended from someone in my italian class. [email protected]
A guide might not be for everyone but we enjoyed being able to ask questions.

"we enjoyed being able to ask questions" -- When I was there (in 2007), there were many very well-informed on-site docents who were happy to answer questions at no charge. Things could have changed since then.
