To me that sounds like any regular phone deal in Europe...all European providers provide free incoming calls and it is normal to be able to buy a discounted phone with some minutes for something around $100. In other words you can probably find something similar in any mobile phone shop in Italy...

this was a website and they will send you the phone before you leave with your nu mber. I realize you can buy them in Italy. We were looking for the website here.

Unless you want to pay an arm and a leg too much, such deals do not exist. There are several web sites selling foreign SIM's and phones but they are big big RIP OFFS. You pay 3x as much for the service pack and more for the phone.

The best idea is to buy a dual or tri band on the net or on ebay. Take a look on ebay at the Nokia 3310 or the Sony Ericsson T300. The first is a dual band and runs as little as $80 at web sites and should be somewhat less on the net. The second is a tri band and is not really available on the net; several web sites advertise it (the phone has been discontinued but is fine) and try to send you a T306 claiming it is an upgrade which is most assuredly is not but rather an Americanized version of the T300 except it does not have 900 but has 850 and is a give away by AT&T and Cingular (see a previous thread on theproblem with Americanized GSM phones for use in Europe).

Best advise...either wait till you get to Italy or buy the phone here as outlined above and then buy the service pack in Italy.

After having used the T300 myself last time I was in the states (since my normal phone was only dualband) I can say it's a decent phone. Not the best I've used, but decent and a great battery life. The reception is pretty good as well. My main problem was that I thinks it's UGLY but after all I'm a vain creature
