Hello! I am Greek, so I can help you! Early May is usually our start of summer. Some years we maybe start our sea swims in May! This year, our Easter is in May 1st. As I can see, you will be in Santorini, and this is a nice timing for you. Santorini is magical and especially in Easter night, with the candles it will be awesome. In general yes, Santorini worths more time than Mykonos. Mykonos has nice beaches but Santorini is a trip of its own. You can hike on the volcano, swim on hot, volcanic waters and wonder around the island.
When in Mykonos, you should follow the Epitaph. It is religious tradition, when we "parade" with Jesus cofin, singing christian songs and holding candles. I am not a religious person, but this tradition is really nice to watch.
About the cheap flights, I believe that because it is Easter the prices will be high, since it is almost high season for both islands.
Hope I helped - enjoy!

Hello!
Travelling in Greece during May it's an excellent choice. The weather is warm enough for swimming and taking walks. This year, our Easter is in May 1st, so will have the opportunity to see the Epitaph and all the other religious traditions of our country. As for the prices..if you book your tickets now you won't have any problem! And yes! Santorini deserve more than Mykonos during May!
Hope i helped!!

Flying between Santorini and Mykonos requires two flights via Athens with a layover at Athens Airport. Highspeed ferries take only about 2 hours, so are actually quicker.
Weather may be warm enough for sunbathing at the beach, but only the most intrepid go swimming that early in the year. It may be sunny and warm, or it could be cool and windy, so be prepared for either.

Statistics say, seawater temps will be between 18°C and 20°C in May, but generally near the coast, especially in shallow bays, the water will be warmer. Last September, statistics said 26°C for Koroni but we had actually 29°C.
For scuba diving, you can rent neoprene suits.

Personally i would find Mykonos a bit boring, given the fact that the water would be too cold for swimming..
On the other hand since you will be there around the Orthodox Easter, it will be quite busy with Athenians....and that will make the island less sleepy
While there will be no problem with getting from Mykonos to Santorini, you should book your tickets to Mykonos, and from Santorini in advance, as this will be a very busy period due to easter.
If you are flying from Santorini to Spain via Athens, make sure you spend your last night in Athens, just in case of flight/ferry cancellations due to wind etc.

If you are going to use averages, I would use statistics for April rather than May for this trip. On the Sailing Issues website it shows seawater average temperature for April in the Mykonos region of 15.5°C or about 60°F, and that's at the surface. Yes, it is usually warmer in shallow bays, but all it takes is a windstorm to stir the water up and cool the temperatures down.

Indeed, some people do swim at the end of April, and even in the winter on mild days. I even have friends who swim in the North Sea in winter, but that's not for me.

There aren't many nearby islands from Santorini (except Thirassia). Since you are spending so much time on Mykonos, you will have a chance to visit the archaeological site on Delos, the uninhabited island about 20 minutes by boat from Mykonos old port. Depending upon ferry timetables you may also be able to visit Tinos from Mykonos.
Another possibility would be to take a night each away from both Mykonos and Santorini and stop at Naxos or Paros in-between the two. Three islands in such a short trip goes against all my instincts, but that would be better than a long day trip with a two-way journey, ending up back where you started.

Whatever you decide to do, you will need to make sure of ferry reservations around that period, especially those going outbound from the mainland before the Easter weekend. Bearing that in mind, my suggestion about a day trip to Tinos may not be such a good idea after all.
If you decided to stop off at Paros or Naxos you would need two tickets, one for Mykonos > Naxos (or Paros), and another from there to Santorini. One advantage is that from either Paros or Naxos you can go to Santorini on Blue Star, which has spectacular views of the islands and Santorini caldera from the open deck.

I was in Santorini last September and it is, as described by others, magical. Even so, I'd reduce Santorini by a day and add that day back to Athens. The weather will probably be mild and water temperature definitely on the cool side.
