Deb, my husband and I will also have a 7 hour layover at Gatwick in September, but we are heading for Rome. We've been to London several times as well as don't fancy paying for Gatwick Express roundtrips.
A train to Brighton sounds interesting. We've never been and we're always up for a nice pub lunch.
Can anyone tell us if there are places in the South Terminal of Gatwick that would store luggage? The only drawback to taking a quick side trip is having to lug around our large suitcases.
AAFrequent Flyer posted some great links. Any personal recommendations? And would one catch the train in the Southern Terminal from the airport for Brighton?

Check out the Royal Pavilion web site.
www.royalpavilion.org.uk/ A tour with audio guides is really worthwhile, IMHO.
You will have ample time to take a tour after the train trip, with time for lunch and the return.
In order to reduce any tension associated with the return, you might consider getting your boarding passes before you leave Gatwick if you do not already have them when you arrive.

Hi loisde
As TimS says, you can leave your bags at LGW. Be sure to leave plenty of time when you get back to the airport since there can sometimes be a queue at left luggage.
I think I suggested Brighton on one of your other threads. If the weather is at all decent when you land - Brighton would be lovely. But you don't have to decide until you get there - no need to pre-book the train or anything. If the weather is lousy you could take a cab to Horley instead and just have a nice pub lunch.
