Before going north to Berlin for a wedding we will be spending time along the Rhine and Mozel with last night in Wurzburg. What should we try to see and where should we stay?

Since I am going to bed now, I might answer tomorrow. Maybe you could be a little bit more precise about you itinerary in the meantime (starting point, number of days, mode of travel)?

As you drive east on the very flat A4 south of Frankfurt you might want to stop for a pause in Aschaffenburg before you get up into the hilly Spessart. Aschaffenburg is not a remarkable city, but has a huge Schloss overlooking the Main River, some good restaurants and hotels, and is laid back.

The problem is not too few things to see but too many. In any case, there are so many good choices that you can hardly go wrong.

We just got back from the Rhein/Mosel. We traveled by train, staying at Trier, St Goar, Bacharch and Mainz, all were worthy stops.

Trier is a former Roman colony and has the ruins to prove it. It also has some fine, old churches. There was plenty to keep us busy for two days.

St. Goar and Bacharach are close together. Bacharach is very attractive but St. Goar with its Rheinfels Castle Ruins appealed more to us. Bacharch is a great photo stop. We also made a day visit to Boppard might stay there if we return to the area. It is more of a town.

Mainz, like Aschaffenburg mentioned above, is less of a tourist center. Both are just nice places to spend time with surely enough tourist activities to keep a person busy for a day. I really liked the Chagall stained glass windows in St. Stephan's in Mainz. Try to see the statue Fasching Fools if you go; it is just plain fun.

Regards, Gary

We much prefer the Mosel to the Rhein, not as crowded or commercial. Have stayed 3 times in Bernkastel and toured from there. Best wine on the Mosel! I would include Cochem and Castle Eltz if you like castles, particularly Eltz. If you stay in Trier, the American WWII Cemetary in Luxemburg is a short drive.
