Florence Sidetrips

We're starting to plan another trip, this one to Italy. We would like to see more of Tuscany on this trip and would like to base in Florence with a series of sidetrips / daytrips. What are some of the best sidetrips from Florence? I know Pisa is easy and touristy...what others?

lucca and siena are the classic answers. Lucca is accessible by train; most people seem to go to siena by bus, but the bus station is a devil to find [just round the corner from the main railway station describes it but doesn't help if you get my meaning] and the journey through the south of florence traffic seems to take forever. Better go by train and catch the bus from the station in siena up to town.
Fiesole, just outside florence in the hills is very lovely and only about 30 minutes on the bus. there is a lovely monastery up above the town, [don't miss the museum in the crypt] the roman amphitheatre, the cathedral, museum, nice restaurant in the square, bar overlooking florence..a very good half-full day trip.

Have a great time!

Hi Md,

Also Bologna and Orvieto.

I wouldn't recommend Venice as a daytrip. It should be at least an overnight.

When we went to Florence, we took the train to Lucca and Pisa. We took a bus to Sienna which was fine. Took the local bus to Fiesole, but wish we had known more about what to explore there. Had an enjoyable time based in Florence at the Hotel Cassi.

Vinci is nice -- you can visit the da Vinci museum.
