Flight trouble

I am having trouble finding a reasonable fare for roundtrip tickets from Detroit to Madrid. Best fare so far is 975.00ea, but we are forced to spend an overnight in London. Is this reasonable? If not what is a reasonable price for this type of ticket

Dave,

We need a little more information. When do you want to leave? This makes a BIG difference. Is it next week, next month or next year? Have you checked www.hotwire.com to see what the tickets are selling for there, just as a baseline, so you'll know what some of the cheapest tickets are costing? Give us a little more info and we'll help.

Dave,

As a postscript, I just did a quick run through on the cheapest tickets from Detroit (DTW) to Madrid, Spain on www.travelocity.com, by just asking for the cheapest tickets, with no dates specified. They showed tickets starting at $473 round-trip (plus tax). Several major carriers listed prices in the $500 - 600 range. Give it a look.

Pay a bit more for non-stop flights to avoid the plane change or stopover hassle (with possible baggage delays or missed connections).
Also traveling during the peak summer season (June thru August) is the most costly , ticketwise.

I have flown off season to madrid for $502.00, (november) and seen it as low as $470.00. One other option you might try, is flying out of Windsor to Toronto to Europe, this is occasionally cheaper although it involves an extra stop and a twin prop plane.

Dear Dave,

While the fares on Travelocity or other sites may look great, it is often very difficult to get them unless you are booking far enough in advance or happen to luck into a "just announced" fare sale. We are traveling from Houston to London in June at $545 per person and I feel lucky to have gotten that. I did book through Travelocity but I was checking the site every day for nearly 1 week before I got that fare. My travel agent couldn't even get the fare that I got. Sometimes the airlines will release seats at the lower fares in order to fill up the plane if the load is not high enough. Also, British Airways vacations had some specials which included 3 nights hotel which you might check out. Buena Suerte!

Hi Dave, Spainair sometimes has good deals out of Washington, D.C. I don't know where else they fly out of-maybe New York.
