Flight out of Barcelona
This July my wife and I will be spending two weeks in Catalonia - the first week in Barcelona and the second week a little further up the coast. We fly out of Barcelona on the 26th around noon and I am wondering if we should plan on spending the night of the 25th in Barcelona or can we make it to the airport from Girona without too much difficulty if we leave Girona the morning of the 26th?
Thanks so much for your suggestions. If you have a hotel that you would recommend for that final evening (assuming that you recommend coming into Barcelona the night of the 25th) I would appreciate it.

You'll need at least 90 mn to get from Girona to Barcelona Bus Station with public transportation (Sagales bus). From Barcelona bus station you'll have to go to the airport either by taxi or by metro to Plaça de Catalunya then shuttle bus to the airport - i.e. over 2.5 hours altogether. I would spend the night at an airport hotel.

By train it's less complicated yet still time-consuming.
Take a medium-distance train from Girona to Barcelona- Passeig de Gracia station. (bit less than 90 minutes travel time)
Change to Rodalies line #2 train to BCN airport which leaves from same platform. (two trains per hour, 25 minutes travel time)
The airport train station is connected to the (old) Terminal 2 with a walkway.
And to (new) Terminal 1 with a free shuttle bus.
To take into account possible waiting time for the next airport train and to get from the airport's station to the terminal buildings, I would leave Girona 3 hours ahead of your desired arrival time at the airport.
If you don't like (I know I would not like it) to leave that early from Girona (and again, are limited to public transport), you can take any train from Girona to Barcelona Sants station the day before.
There is at least a good dozen, often moderately-priced hotels in easy walking distance from the station (1/4 mile or less).
Normally I would not recommend that area for a regular stay in Barcelona (not because of safety concerns but because it's a bit boring), but with trains and luggage it's an effortless option for just one night.
The Metro will take you from Sants station to the historic city center in 10 minutes.
Next morning, just walk back to Sants station and take the airport train. It takes just 20 minutes from there, and costs less than the bus.
So I don't see the need to spend the last night in an airport hotel with nothing around, EXCEPT you had a rental car. In that case, you might want to stay near the airport to have easier access to parking and drop off next morning.
If you need to drive, check Google Maps for directions from Girona to Barcelona Airport.
I would not recommend the first, shorter option via Barcelona's northern orbital freeway (B-20 / Ronda da Dalt). It's usually congested during working days' rush hours. On weekends it should be okay, though.
Stay on AP-7 instead until you hit AP-2 so you make a slightly wider loop around Barcelona. That should be Google Map's 2nd option.

I would certainly stay in Barcelona the night before a flight. Quoting how long it may take by road or rail is only theory, as on the morning of your departure there could be delays using either mode of transport. You'd have to leave Girona around 8am, which means getting up at 7am--not too bad, but if there are problems you'll be stoking up your blood pressure.
Stay in town, catch a cab and be at the airport in 15/20 minutes.

actually, you don't even have to stay near the train station in Barcelona - just near the metro line ( if you are taking the train to the airport) or Catalunya ( if you are taking a bus)
The cab would be about 25 euros.
