First time going overseas, please help

Hi, I am going to france next week. I have a large backpack that I hiked on the appalachian trail with and wondering if I could travel in europe with only this...is this a good idea? Also, I am looking for nice place to stay in Paris for like 50.00 per night, any suggestions?

You'll see all sorts of backpacks in Europe. Keep in mind that you'll be toting it around cities, not just mountain trails. If you are (as I suspect) on the youthful side and don't plan to do anything that would require formal dress (like fine dining, casinos, etc.) then you will blend in with all the other kids in jeans and T-shirts. You can usually check your backpack at a train station if spending just one day in a place, or leave it (locked) at a hostel/hotel where you're staying. Do NOT, however, leave your passport or valuables, including your Eurailpass - keep these with you at all times.
Have a wonderful time - it will be the stuff of great memories!

When I took my teens to Europe, they took carry-on roller suitcases and a Jansport type backpack. We would see girls with backbacks on their backs, Jansports draped from their fronts and looked like they were hot, tired, and just plain lugging too much stuff.

Go to the Rick Steves web site and check out how to pack LIGHT.

Well, sorry Scott. Now that I look at your post again I see you are a guy. Saw lots of guys with backpacks but even so, learn to pack light. You will be much more comfortable.

You may want to check out www.anamericaninparis.com for hotels. They have a few for around $50. Also hostels. Good luck.
