Fine tuning trip to St. Petersburg

We are traveling independently to St. Petersburg (SP) by train from Helsinki for 4 nights (September 4-9). Visas issued, train and hotel reservations made. Can I wait until I arrive in SP to purchase tickets to the Hermitage and sight-seeing tours at this time of year? I've read that the Hermitage stays open late two nights a week so I am hoping that an evening visit might be less crowded.

Recommendations for a walking tour and tour guides to visit Catherine's Palace would also be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Sandra

Sorry I can't answer this question, but are you sure that you will find an evening visit sufficient? It is huge!
