FedEx'ing packages

i would like to hear from anyone out there what experience you might have had in shipping personal items to yourself while travelling through italy.

as part of my trip, i wil l be staying for 3 weeks in positano. i was hoping, and maybe this is just bad idea (you tell me), to send a box full of new clothes and CDs and books. this way i would not have to carry all this "stuff" around with me while i am travelling for the first two weeks to the various cities i will be visiting, afterall not a whole lot will fit into a backpack.

i do have someone who will pick up the package should it arrive befor i get there, the one concern i really have, other than the expense, is finding a place to repackage and remail the box back home. i am assuming sorrento would probably be the closest place to find a FedEx or UPS or some other mail carrier... am i wrong?

what do you think of this plan?

I suggest you call FEDEX and DHL. While FEDEX works well in larger cities in Europe, my experience has been DHL is much better in Europe as they appear to be more prevalent. Both can tell you over the phone via their international desks. You can also look on their websites. Finally, a lot of the bigger European cities now have places like Mailboxes USA (there are a few in Paris, for example) so you might want to inquire with them. Perhaps they would have them in Naples since it's a city of over 1 million but I don't know about Sorrento. In any event, I think DHL is better and always make sure someone signs for it and that it's not just "no signature required." Good luck!

DHL is the better choice for Italy. I have had numerous problems with DHL and FEDEX, several in the last 6 months and I would avoid shipping if possible. My advice is to start in Positano and use Mail Boxes Etc. to ship stuff home when you're done or buy what you need over there.

shipped to italy from the u.s. using
fedex. i mailed 3 boxes to villages near the adriatic coast. all boxes were
received in 4 days (mailed from the pitts., pa area). i tracked the package
on the fedex website daily to see where it was. worked great for me.

Just a warning about the cost -
I went to MailBoxes Etc. in Florence to ship a small box of 'stuff' home, and they wanted about US$140, with a 7 day delivery. YIKES!
I ended up using their services to prep the box for shipping via the Italian postal service, and mailed the box {via boat} for about US$30. (Air would have been US$60.) Since it was just dirty laundry and assorted papers, I didn't care that it took 60 days to arrive in the US ...
