We stayed at Londra Palace in 2005,
and I would highly recommend it.

We stayed at the Marconi in October 2006. Can't beat the location, and the rooms were very evocative of everything Venetian. Small, but that's to be expected. We only had a very small window in an awkward corner, so if that matters be sure to be directly in touch with the hotel to confirm a particular room. Front desk was very nice, although they were clearly getting kickbacks from some of the restaurants and performances they recommended. Have to say, though, for the price and location, we'd stay there again. Have fun!

We also stayed at the Marconi and really liked it! We had a reasonably sized room w/a real window, but while they were cleaning the rooms in the front overlooking the Grand Canal we snuck in for a look. Heavenly! Like what you would imagine from an old time movie or novel about Venice!

What amazes me about this hotel is its combination of incredible location w/o being noisy.

I don't know what your budget is, jlpx2, but if you find some of the previously-mentioned places not in your budget, you might consider the B&B Corte1321.

It is owned by 2 American women and was the loveliest place we stayed in all of Europe. It is in the San Polo district, about 2 mts to the Vaporetto and 5-7 mts to the Rialto Bridge. Here is website:

Locanda Orseolo. No question about it.

We have been in the Hotel industry for 25 years and have been to many, many resorts, hotels and inns...never had this type of experience. It was awesome. We did not even get a "deluxe" room...but we did have canal view. It is about the people that run it...I'm sure Al Ponte Antico is just as great. We "drove by it" but did not have a chance to get in.

Pensione Accademia in the area of Dosordura. Request Room #44 which has a view of a side canal and has a lot of windows. Even a big window in the bathroom.

Hotel Flora, my favorite.

Hi, can someone look at this hotel - www.alpontemocenigo.com and give me their opinions - especially about the location. Does it seem too far from the main areas that we would walk to?

My budget is about 150-175 euros for a room that will accommodate 3, some of the hotels mentioned above are far more.

E/C....Did I miss your saying when you are going? Prices in Venice vary over the year and 175 euros may buy more or less hotel depending on when.

We are considering going to Italy again next May. The Ca Dei Conti looks like a great place to stay.

For anyone who has stayed there - can you recommend a particular room? There is a wide range of prices for the rooms. Would consider the lower end, i.e., Loft or Classic but even within the Classic category the prices vary greatly.

I love Al Ponte Mocenigo. It is in a quiet neighborhood but also just 5-10 minutes from Ponte Rialto, a major area for visitors. It is also just steps from a vaporetto stop. It's location also means there are less touristy, less expensive restaurants nearby. I have stayed here twice and would return again in a minute.

I see Locanda Orseolo is now in the Fodors Italy 2009 book, so get your reservations in early!

That hotel is by the train station, right? I think it's a bit out-of-the-way, but that is where many of the lower priced hotels are located.

La Calcina I mentioned earlier is in your price range, but I don't see triple rooms listed on their website.

The reason people are suggesting more expensive hotels is because the OP on this thread asked about "upscale" ones.

Al Ponte Mocenigo is not BY the train station. It's in a quiet part of Santa Croce right by the San Stae stop. I find it jsut as convenient as staying in Dorsoduro on the Zatterre, my other preferred neighborhood.

Thanks for the info, I am glad that the location is convenient. We will be there in the first week of June. Since I am not sure if there will be 3 or 4 of us, we can get a triple here & then add an extra bed if necessary. Of course , the price with the extra bed is over my budget but oh well!
The other choice would be to find an apt but since we will be doing that in Rome, I thought a hotel might be a change here. Any opinions on hotel v/s apt in Venice?

We just got back from Venice Italy, we stayed for 4 nights at La Locandiera. It is located within 5 minute walk to St. Marks square in a small piazza very quite and close to all the sights, the hotel is spotless we had a triple room and it was very large, breakfast is included. The people that mange the hotel are very nice and helpful. It is not a upscale hotel but we liked it very much.
