Europe tour - advice needed
March 2012 I will retire at the age of 65. The wife and I would like to tour Europe April to June) in a campervan for about 90 days. (We are only allowed 90 days on a Schengen visa!) We have already been to most of the countries eg Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany. It was a sort of highlights tour in 21 days six years ago, touring in a small car and staying in B&B's.
We now want to add Spain, Prague, Budapest,Poland, and Denmark..
Any advice on an itenary. Will probably get the campervan(Volkswagen Kombi type) in Germany and fly directly to Germany from South Africa. Traveling is part of the tour as we like to stop in small towns along the route and dawdle.
The only two big cities we left out on the first tour is Rome and Berlin. We will include these this time but will not go to Venice and Florence in Italy.
I know that 2 years is a long time, we may even die before April 2012! But the pleasure for me is in the planning.
We are campers and last year toured Namibia (Caprivi, Kaokaland) and Botswana in our Landrover and 4X4 trailer.

It can be very expensive these days to rent a camper vehicle and it's difficult to buy and insure one unless you are an EU resident.
These people can help:

In April many campgrounds will be closed... once you have the vehicle I'd head south asap to your most southerly destination and work back north as the weather improves.
You should seek out some specialist motorcaravanning sites. Fodors is great but you'll find things more geared to hotel type
travel. Here's a place you can start:

The Dutch love campers and caravans and use them year round. Many sites will be open in April, even in Germany and the Netherlands.
I suggest you buy a couple of good guides to camp sites. If you can read Dutch, which is after all pretty similar (in some ways at least ) to Afrikaans, then you could see if you can find the Facile-on-route Campergids for Europa (ISBN: 9789076080192). It has lots of info on sites for campers including GPS coordinates and the like.
Turner Cars and capers will sell you a camper, and hold the registration for you as non EU citizens, but they will not buy back the camper, though they will sell it on for you, on commission.

Are all hire companies. There is also a company in Amsterdam which will do like Turner, but I believe they buy back at the end of your trip too. I can't remember their name off hand though.
Do have fun - it sounds a great retirement trip to me.
