ENGLAND
MEETING FIENDS IN PARIS THE MIDDLE OF SEPTEMBER AND CONSIDERING GOING A WEEK OR SO
EARLY AND TAKING THE TRAIN TO LONDON TO RENT
A CAR AND SEE THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE, AND
RETURN TO MEET FRIENDS IN PARIS BY SAME TRAIN. Also the air fares to paris are at
times more resonable. Does anyone have any
experience or recommendations. Is this enough time to get a little idea of the country. We have more experience with France but anxious to see some of England. Thanks so much.

I love England and would live there half of each year if I could afford it. Usually when we want to see the country side we travel by train or coach (bus). This is one suggestion I would make to you: IF you arrive in London I would advise that you take any form of transportation at your disposal and GET OUT OF LONDON BEFORE YOU GET A RENTAL CAR. Americans tend to forget that, unlike virtually every city in the US, London is NOT laid out on a grid. The streets were designed 1500 or more years ago before the concept of combustion powered vehicles was a gleam in anyone's imagination. Add to this equation that the traffic will be as heavy as any you've seen anywhere and you will start to see what I mean. I would NEVER drive in London on a bet, and several of my firends who have ALL recount it as a nightmare experience. Two had minor accidents on the first day.

Just a suggestion, but if you can avoid a possible hassle, why risk ruining a trip? Take a nice train to Bath or York, rent your car there and have fun. Yes, you will have time to get a nice feel for a beautiful country. Consider driving toward Edinburgh, if you make it, great and if you run out of time simply head back early. Or, get to E. and drop off the car and take the train back to London.

September is a great month! We've been to England several times and one of our best trips included walking in the Cotswold region. There are many public footpaths which will allow you to walk between quaint villages. Also, stay in B&B's - you'll meet great people!
