Eiffel Tower

Will be in Paris 1 week in October. Heard the lights on the Eiffel Tower are now out. Can you still tour? Also spending 1 week in Nice with a car to do day trips. Are the winding roads - like to Monaco - safe to drive? Will travel daytime only.

The lights were still on in June. We could watch them from our bed at night.

The twinkling lights are finished....but will start up again in 2003 I think. Maybe earlier. Other than that, it's open as usual. I didn't find the roads above Nice bad at all. Some great towns to visit - Eze, Menton, Vence, St Paul de Vence. I did get a little bit of a panic attack driving down the steep, curvy road to Monaco, so I won't do that again. For more Paris information e-mail me – [email protected]

Yes- the lights were turned off on Bastille Day this year. You can still tour the tower and enjoy the view of the city though. The little twinkle lights are supposed to be put back up next year sometime. The tower is still it up at night with floodlights.

Hi Bonnie. There are three corniche roads that run east from Nice: low, middle, and high. I've driven the last two, find them quite safe, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. If you're a slow driver you'll probably find some drivers tailgating you, so that may make you nervous, but they'll pass at the earliest opportunity. There is also an autoroute (like a freeway) that runs parallel to the coast if you'd prefer a less winding and mountainous route. Hope you have a great time.

We just returned from Paris and beat the long lines waiting to go up the Eiffel Tower by making a reservation to eat lunch at the restaurant in the tower, Altitude 95. It's great. You go right up. No waiting. I highly recommend it. You can call from the U.S. to make your reservation, and, if you don't speak French, they speak English.

For some interesting fun, try and win tickets up to the eiffle tower. Just go to their website, I found it under askjeeves.com. It takes a while to figure out all the answers, but what the heck. You'll learn some interesting facts, and I got my 2 tickets within 6 days of winning. Make sure the web site is official, several look alike.
