We're just beginning to think about taking our daughters, 32 and almost 30 to Edinburgh next spring. I'm mulling May or June for the long days, although our preferred travel time is late September to mid October. We were there 35 or so years ago, and had glorious weather in May.

My late Dad was born in Edinburgh, so if they can arrange time off work it would be nice to see where they came from. Both are looking for new jobs, so it might not even happen, but I want to get things going a bit now.

The £ is so high against the Canadian dollar, so we'll be looking to economize where we can. A perusal of VRBO suggests we can get something in Old Town for a week for about £800. That translates to approximately $1700, for a 2BR apartment.

I'm drawing a blank coming up with other reputable agencies. I'm a bit frightened of AirBnB, so if anyone can advise me of good agencies or even a link to a specific apartment, that would be great.

I might be looking for the impossible, centre of city, clean, a good 2* or 3*.

We stayed in Edinburgh last July at an apartment that we really liked. We used the 2 bedroom 'high street.' It was clean, well located, and the owner was very helpful. It also comes with free parking (about 15 min walk) if you need it.

I just checked for a random week in May and the cost was 840 pounds. They are flexible about the number of nights.

I should clarify, that if I can find something for about £100/night, or even less, that would be great.

I've always managed to find good hotels or apartments in great locations for good prices, it just takes some digging and asking the question.

We just returned from a visit to Edinburgh; we stayed at an apartment on W. Nicolson St. owned by Nicolson Apartments. We stayed at an apartment for three people, so not suitable for you, and the price might not work, but they do have a number of apartments. They were easy to work with and the apartment was clean, well-equipped and in a great location.

IME (many many visits) only Edinburgh accommodation is more expensive than cities in most parts of England - and is often up near London prices. Ss for country B&Bs - again IME - they tend to be cheaper in Scotland than in scenic bits of England.

It's dawning on me that my budget may have to be increased somewhat!

The public transport in Edinburgh is very good. One can usually save quite a bit staying slightly out of the center -- just be sure the place in on a bus line.

homeaway and vrbo are related. The former bought the latter.

Google Edinburgh vacation flats or substitute "short term rental" for vacation and you should get a bunch of offerings.

Note that Edinburgh is a city, but it's relatively small - less than 500K people - less than 1/3 Montreal or 1/5 Toronto. Its footprint isn't that big either so you should be able to find something relatively central without too much bother if you're pushing up to the 1000 quid/week range.
