Search here for easyjet - - you will find a ton of positive comments. Although I have not flown them, I have been repeatedly pleased with ryanair (also a very large number of posts, including some not all that positive) - - and their fares (before taxes) are literally (sometimes)50-98% less than easyjet. Fares of 0.00 or 0.01 are not unheard of on ryanair!

I had two positive experiences in the last two weeks with EasyJet. I think your odds may be better of a happy, easy experience with a low-cost carrier than with a major airline, just because the low-cost carriers take pains to cut away all the complications. Just remember there aren't any assigned seats (like Southwest) and that if you want food or drink, you will buy it on board. And allow plenty of time to check in, because if you don't make the cutoff time, you are likely out of luck.

I have flown EasyJet a number of times - 2 years ago between London and Spain, and last week from London to Amsterdam, Berlin to Nice and Nice to London. The fares can be unbelievable if you plan far enough in advance. Be sure to arrive at the airport early. There are no advance seat reservations (like Southwest, they board in order of your boarding pass number), and you have to be checked in at least 1/2 hour before your flight or they will close you out.
