Dublin Hotels

We (2 adults) will be spending three nights in Dublin the first week of September. Any recommendations? We are not looking for luxury but do want something comfortable and within walking distance of major attractions. We also have heard that prices are much more reasonable North of the River.
Thanks.

Hi, We will be in Dublin 6/27-30. Have a room at St. Andrew's Guest House in the north suburb of Druncondra. 10 min from town. Can see it www.travel-ireland.com/irl/standrew.htm Can let you know how it was after 7/9.

I think you willbe dismayed by the prices of hotels in Dublin...whether or not they are in a "luxury" category. They simply are not worth it.. BandBs are the way to go. consider the south side of the city..Sandymount, Rathfarnam. Ranelagh,Donnybrook. Call the Irish Tourist Bureau in NYC. Order the Town and Country Guide to BandBs...and any other stuff that may interest you. It,s not free, but, really, essential for you to make "informed" decisions.Ask for the list of publications to be sent to your home. It is true that prices are lower North of the city(not the river/which bisects the city.) You want the best Hotel value in Dublin area? The Mount Herbert in Ballsbridge. But the chances of getting in now are limited. Good bus service and(if you are not infirm) not a bad walk to downtown Baile ath Cliath.I just love Ireland and will help you any way I can.
In Dublin, we met several people who recommended Bewly's (spelling?), south of the Liffy.
If you want peace & quiet, I wouldn't recommend anything in Temple Bar.
We stayed at Mount Herbert Guest House in a lovely residential area. About 7 minutes to the city center by DART (train - easy). The rooms are really varied (we changed twice, ending up with a huge comfortable room). Fodor gives this hotel a one $ sign, which means it should be relatively inexpensive (we were with a tour - don't know hotel cost).
One caveat: don't eat the food!!! - the worst we had in Ireland. (We had excellent food the rest of the time.)

The jurys hotel chain is reasonably inexpensive although quite basic. I would recommend staying in B&Bs, the price doesnt really vary significantly throughout the city and in general the quality is good. http://www.goireland.com has a full accomodation listing for Dublin and gives a short review on all B&Bs and hotels. You really will need to get booking now if you are going in September.
Enjoy

Yikes! I am also going to Dublin at the end of August for one night and did not realize we needed to book a hotel far in advance. We are spending 6 days driving from Dublin to the west coast and flying out of Shannon. Do we also need to book rooms at B&B's in advance? I was in Dublin 4 years ago and stayed at the Berkley Court - I seem to remember that it was expensive and the room was ok. Not worth the money.

Kate

You're better safe than sorry. If you have a particular B&B or hotel in which you would like to stay you are better to book early. August/September is a busy period both in Dublin and the West, a lot of tourists for the festivals such as the oyster festivals, can lead to problems. Booking early is the best option to avoid any problems.

Anne Marie --
I found this 'guest house' -- Kilronan House (www.dublinn.com/booking.htmt)-- through a Fodor's recommendation. It looks like a good location, and we're booked there for our trip in October. I have no idea if they would still have space available for September, but you might check it out online. They are a Fodors recommendation, and I've been pleased with other Fodors places I've used in the States. The rates for Kilronan House are 45 IP per person, or about $110 per night at current exchange rates. Maybe someone else has stayed there and has comments?

Hope this helps!

I can definitely recommend the Kilronan House. I stayed there for 2 nights last October. The management is very helpful and the breakfast is great. It is within walking distance of Grafton Street and Temple Bar.

There is a good restaurant they recommend called GB Shaws around the corner.

It is also in a very safe neighborhood.
