Has anyone driven from Zurich to Lake Como? If so, any advice on how long it takes and any suggested routes, stop overs, dining or lodging would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

So this will be much shorter. Found a road map that shows your trip is about 2 hours. We are taking a little bit longer route that takes 3 hrs 45 min and goes through Innsbruck over the Brenner Pass and to Lake Garda instead of Lake Como. Its a beautiful crystal clear lake with a darling town with open air markets etc. If our route sounds like it would interest you I can give you restaurants, motels etc.

We drove to Lake Como from Switzerland last year -- and it took us all day -- but we made lots of stops for photos (of course) and lunch in St. Moritz. I can tell you that it took us well over 2 hours just to get from St. Moritz to Lake Como! The scenery along this route (Landeck-Zernez-St. Moritz-Pontresina-Lake Como) is really beautiful, and we stopped for lots of incredible pictures. However, the Bernina Pass (at Pontresina) can be a hair-raising experience if you are afraid of heights. We went in winter, and the road was wet (slippery) and you could have passed us going down that hill walking (we were driving so slow)! However, I've made that same journey in June and the scenery is still out-of-this-world! (Isn't everything in the Swiss Alps) One other word of advice when planning your chosen route -- make sure to take local eating times into account (lunch time, dinner time, etc.) We left Innsbruck early in the morning and planned to stop for lunch in St. Moritz enroute. But when we finally arrived (about 2 or 2:30) -- all the restaurants were closed or had stopped serving... so we ended up playing close to $12 a piece for cold sandwiches and a can of coke. Not at all what we had in mind for our St. Moritz experience! If I had thought ahead -- about the strict adherence to "eating hours" in Europe we would have stopped to eat (where ever we were) exactly at lunch time. Bon voyage!

Rene, sounds like you were on the same road as we took. Drove from Lake Como to St. Moritz for lunch during winter. Phew.. what a hair-raising experience..tight, winding, icy roads SOOO high and SOO narrow..all the time knowing that we had to turn around and do it all over again to get back to our hotel - but we did make it in time for lunch! Our stomachs were full but our wallet was empty - lovely but very expensive. We were also caught out many times arriving at interesting places to find everything (except the restaurants) closed between 12 - 2. If you want a picnic lunch buy your supplies early in the day and carry with you until lunchtime.

When you travel a lot with children you see a lot of public toilets. The cleanest in the world must be at St Moritz - better than mine at home - spotlessly clean, beautifully heated, full of soap and lots of paper.. a traveling mother's dream!
