Driving from Rome to Sorrento
We will be driving from Rome to Sorrento, picking up the car at the rome Airport (fumicino). All the directions that i have seen show taking the autostrada to naples and then down the coast. my question is that "is it possible to drive all the way down the coast from Rome? is that a big problem....any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Go to maps.google.com and type in from Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport and to Sorrento. Under the destination box (B), click on options and then check the boxes "Avoid Highways" and "Avoid Tolls." Click "Search." When the highlighted route appears, you can further refine it by clicking/dragging the mouse away from an interior road and to the coastal road in the few segments where the recommended route leaves the coast. This is easier to do if you first zoom in to that area of the map. If you then switch to streetview (click/drag the little yellow man to a point on the blue highlighted route), you can see what your views would be on that portion of the road.
You'll see it's doable. Whether it's enjoyable I'll leave to someone else who's driven the entire route. It's at least 7 hours plus a lunch stop, and on a summer weekend it would probably take longer. I hope you're not planning on making this drive after getting off a long flight. That would be a serious mistake.
You may want to stop at Anzio and/or Nettuno to view the WWII landing beaches of Operation Shingle. There are British and Commonwealth cemeteries at Anzio and an American cemetery at Nettuno.
Cicero's Tomb is in Formia.

I haven't done this entire drive, so I can't suggest the "best" place to leave the coast. I think that decision depends on how much you're enjoying the coastal drive and how long it's taking. IMO, this could be a real slog in places, especially if you're doing it during the summer and double-especially if it's a summer weekend. You should have GPS or carry a detailed road map of the entire area and not just a map you printed off a website.
It is the A1, but at some point it's called (or overlays) the E45 and the A1 turns off into Naples. I don't remember the number of the secondary road to Sorrento, but the turnoff is well marked.
